The difference is how the bones are held together and how much they can move. In fibrous joints the bones are bound by dense fibrous connective tissue and cannot move (example: flat skull bones fused as sutures). In cartilaginous joints the bones are joined by cartilage and can make only limited movement (example: between adjacent vertebrae). In synovial joints there is a fluid-filled synovial cavity between the two bones, which allows considerable, free movement (example: knee, shoulder).
The fibrous joint allows no movement. Here the bones are joined end-to-end by dense fibrous connective tissue with no cavity and no cartilage cushion, so there is no space for the bones to slide. NCERT gives the flat skull bones, which fuse into sutures to form the cranium, as the example.
The joint between adjacent vertebrae in the vertebral column is a cartilaginous joint. The bones are joined by cartilage, so the joint permits only limited (small) movement. This limited flexibility is what lets your backbone bend a little at each level.
A synovial joint has a fluid-filled synovial cavity between the articulating surfaces of the two bones. This synovial fluid acts as a lubricant and the cavity gives the bones room to move, so the joint allows considerable movement. That is why synovial joints (knee, shoulder, elbow) are the main joints used in locomotion.
