Are 'starter' and 'inoculum' the same thing?
Yes. NCERT uses both words for the same thing. It writes: a small amount of curd added to fresh milk as 'inoculum or starter'. Both mean the seed material that carries the living lactic acid bacteria into the fresh milk. NEET can use either word in a question, so treat them as equal.
What does the starter actually contain?
The starter is just a little old curd, and that little bit contains millions of LAB (lactic acid bacteria) such as Lactobacillus. You are not adding a chemical — you are adding living bacteria. These bacteria are the true agent that sets the curd.
Why can't fresh milk become curd on its own?
