Is the cerebrum part of the forebrain, or is it separate?
The cerebrum IS part of the forebrain. NCERT clearly says the forebrain consists of cerebrum, thalamus and hypothalamus. The cerebrum is just the largest of these three parts, so students wrongly treat it as a separate main division. Remember: brain = forebrain + midbrain + hindbrain, and cerebrum sits inside the forebrain.
What is the difference between thalamus and hypothalamus?
The thalamus is a major coordinating (relay) centre for sensory and motor signalling. The hypothalamus lies at the base of (just below) the thalamus and controls body temperature, the urge for eating and drinking, and has neurosecretory cells that make hypothalamic hormones. Simple memory: 'hypo' means below, so hypothalamus is below the thalamus and does the body-maintenance jobs.
Which part of the forebrain controls hunger, thirst and body temperature?
The hypothalamus. It contains centres that control body temperature, and the urge for eating (hunger) and drinking (thirst). It also releases hypothalamic hormones from neurosecretory cells. Students often wrongly write cerebrum or thalamus here, but for hunger, thirst and temperature the answer is always the hypothalamus.
Is the corpus callosum grey matter or white matter?
The corpus callosum is a tract of nerve fibres (myelinated fibres) connecting the two cerebral hemispheres, so it is white matter. Grey matter is the cerebral cortex (the outer layer where neuron cell bodies are concentrated). White matter lies inside and is white because of the myelin sheath on the fibres.
Does the limbic system control movement?
No. This is a classic NEET trap. The limbic system, together with the hypothalamus, regulates sexual behaviour and emotional reactions (excitement, pleasure, rage, fear) and motivation. It does NOT control movement. Pairing 'limbic system' with 'controls movement' is wrong.
Where exactly does the cerebrum lie compared to the thalamus?
The cerebrum wraps around the thalamus. NCERT states the cerebrum wraps around a structure called the thalamus, which is the major coordinating centre for sensory and motor signalling. So the thalamus is deep inside, covered by the cerebrum.
