The hypothalamus is a small part at the base of the forebrain (in the diencephalon). NCERT says it does two main jobs: it controls body temperature, hunger (eating) and thirst (drinking), and it holds groups of neurosecretory cells (nuclei) that make releasing and inhibiting hormones which control the pituitary gland. Is the hypothalamus in the forebrain or the hindbrain?

It is in the FOREBRAIN. NCERT clearly says the forebrain consists of the cerebrum, thalamus and hypothalamus. The hypothalamus lies at the base of the forebrain, in the diencephalon part. It is NOT in the hindbrain. The hindbrain has the pons, cerebellum and medulla. Students lose marks by putting hypothalamus in the hindbrain, so lock it to the forebrain.

What is the difference between thalamus and hypothalamus?

Both are in the forebrain but do different jobs. The thalamus is a relay centre — it passes sensory and motor signals to and from the cerebrum. The hypothalamus lies below the thalamus and controls body temperature, hunger, thirst, and has neurosecretory cells that make hormones to run the pituitary. Simple line: thalamus = signal relay, hypothalamus = homeostasis and hormone control.

Does the hypothalamus or the medulla control body temperature?

The HYPOTHALAMUS controls body temperature (the thermoregulation centre), plus hunger and thirst. The MEDULLA OBLONGATA controls respiration and cardiovascular reflexes and gastric secretions. NEET loves to swap these two in match-the-column questions. So temperature/hunger/thirst = hypothalamus; breathing/heart reflexes = medulla.

Does the hypothalamus make hormones?

Yes. NCERT says the hypothalamus contains several groups of neurosecretory cells called nuclei that produce hormones. These are of two types: releasing hormones (which stimulate pituitary hormone secretion, e.g. GnRH) and inhibiting hormones (which inhibit pituitary secretion, e.g. somatostatin). So the hypothalamus acts as a neural AND an endocrine control centre — this dual role is a favourite NEET point.

How is the hypothalamus linked to the pituitary gland?

The hypothalamus is the boss of the pituitary. Its neurosecretory cells send releasing hormones and inhibiting hormones to the pituitary, which then decide whether the pituitary releases its own hormones. So the chain of command is: hypothalamus controls pituitary, and pituitary controls other endocrine glands. This links the neural and endocrine chapters together, which NEET often tests.
