Medulla Oblongata: Respiration and Cardiovascular Control

Biology · Neural Control and Coordination · NEET

The medulla oblongata is the lowest part of the hindbrain, and it connects the brain to the spinal cord. In NCERT words, "the medulla contains centres which control respiration, cardiovascular reflexes and gastric secretions." Memory hook: think "medulla = MEDIC" — it keeps you alive by running your breathing and heartbeat without you thinking about it.

The medulla oblongata is the lowest hindbrain part linking brain to spinal cord. Its centres control respiration, cardiovascular reflexes and gastric secretions; the pons pneumotaxic centre only fine-tunes breathing.

Your doubts, answered

Does the medulla start the heartbeat, or does it only control it?

The medulla does NOT start the heartbeat. Your heart is myogenic — it beats on its own because of nodal tissue (SA node). NCERT says a special neural centre in the medulla oblongata can only MODERATE cardiac function through the autonomic nervous system: sympathetic nerves speed up the heart and increase force, parasympathetic nerves slow it down. So the medulla adjusts the heart, it does not create the beat. This exact difference is a favourite NEET trap.

Which part controls respiration — the medulla or the pons?

Both, but at different levels. The respiratory rhythm centre is in the MEDULLA and is primarily responsible for the breathing rhythm. The pneumotaxic centre is in the PONS and only moderates (fine-tunes) the medulla's rhythm centre. So the medulla is the main breathing controller; the pons is the assistant that adjusts it. For NEET, remember: rhythm = medulla, pneumotaxic = pons.

Is the medulla part of the hindbrain or the brainstem?

It is both. NCERT clearly states the hindbrain comprises pons, cerebellum and medulla. Separately, the brainstem is made of midbrain, pons and medulla oblongata. So the medulla belongs to the hindbrain (a developmental region) AND to the brainstem (a functional connecting region). These are two different groupings, and the medulla appears in both.

What are the exact three functions of the medulla in NCERT?

NCERT lists exactly three: (1) control of respiration, (2) control of cardiovascular reflexes, and (3) control of gastric secretions. Memorise these three words — respiration, cardiovascular, gastric — because NEET matching questions test them directly. The medulla also connects the brain to the spinal cord.

Why is the medulla called vital or life-supporting?

Because the centres it holds — breathing and heart control — run automatically and never stop, even during sleep. If the medulla is damaged, breathing and heartbeat regulation fail, which is why it is called a vital centre. This is the memory hook: medulla = keeps you alive.

⚠️ The NEET trap
The medulla oblongata generates (starts) the heartbeat and respiration.
The heart is myogenic (beat started by nodal tissue); the medulla only MODERATES cardiac function via the ANS. It contains centres controlling respiration, cardiovascular reflexes and gastric secretions.
🧠 Watch the verb: NCERT says medulla 'controls/moderates', never 'generates', the heartbeat. Pair it with respiration + cardiovascular reflexes + gastric secretions — not 'movement' (that is a distractor).

Real NEET questions

NEET 2018

Which of the following structures or regions is incorrectly paired with its functions?

A · Hypothalamus : production of releasing hormones and regulation of temperature, hunger and thirst.
B · Limbic system : consists of fibre tracts that interconnect different regions of brain; controls movement.
C · Medulla oblongata : controls respiration and cardiovascular reflexes.
D · Corpus callosum : band of fibers connecting left and right cerebral hemispheres.
Solution: The medulla pairing (C) is correct — it does control respiration and cardiovascular reflexes. The wrongly paired one is (B): the limbic system controls emotions/behaviour, NOT 'fibre tracts that interconnect regions and control movement' (that describes the pons). So B is the incorrect pair.
NEET 2024

Match List I with List II: List I A. Pons B. Hypothalamus C. Medulla D. Cerebellum List II I. Provides additional space for neurons, regulates posture and balance II. Controls respiration and gastric secretions III. Connects different regions of the brain IV. Neurosecretory cells

A · A-III, B-IV, C-II, D-I
B · A-I, B-III, C-II, D-IV
C · A-II, B-I, C-III, D-IV
D · A-II, B-III, C-I, D-IV
Solution: Pons connects different regions of the brain (III); hypothalamus has neurosecretory cells (IV); medulla controls respiration and gastric secretions (II); cerebellum provides space for neurons and regulates posture and balance (I). So the match is A-III, B-IV, C-II, D-I.
NEET 2024

Given below are two statements: Statement I: The cerebral hemispheres are connected by a nerve tract known as corpus callosum. Statement II: The brain stem consists of the medulla oblongata, pons and cerebrum.

A · Both Statement I and Statement II are incorrect.
B · Statement I is Correct but Statement II is incorrect.
C · Statement I is incorrect but Statement II is correct.
D · Both Statement I and Statement II are correct.
Solution: Statement I is correct — the corpus callosum connects the two cerebral hemispheres. Statement II is wrong — the brainstem is midbrain + pons + medulla oblongata, NOT cerebrum (cerebrum is part of the forebrain). Hence only Statement I is correct.

Frequently asked

What is the function of the medulla oblongata?

Per NCERT, the medulla contains centres that control respiration, cardiovascular reflexes and gastric secretions. It also connects the brain to the spinal cord.

Is the medulla oblongata part of the brainstem?

Yes. The brainstem consists of three parts: midbrain, pons and medulla oblongata. The medulla is also part of the hindbrain.

Where is the respiratory rhythm centre located?

The respiratory rhythm centre is located in the medulla region of the brain and is primarily responsible for regulating breathing. The pneumotaxic centre in the pons only moderates it.

Does the medulla control the heartbeat?

It moderates, not generates, the heartbeat. The heart is myogenic (started by nodal tissue); the medulla adjusts cardiac output through sympathetic and parasympathetic nerves of the autonomic nervous system.

What connects the brain to the spinal cord?

The medulla oblongata connects the brain to the spinal cord. It is the lowest part of the hindbrain and brainstem.
