Brain Parts and Their Functions: Quick Match Guide

Biology · Neural Control and Coordination · NEET

Each brain part has one job you must not mix up: cerebrum thinks, cerebellum balances, medulla runs breathing and heartbeat, hypothalamus controls hunger and temperature, thalamus relays signals, and the limbic system handles emotion. NEET loves to give these as "Match the Column" or "which pair is wrong" questions. Memory hook: "CCM-HTL" - Cerebrum-think, Cerebellum-balance, Medulla-breathe, Hypothalamus-hunger, Thalamus-relay, Limbic-emotion.

Quick-match table of major human brain parts with their single key function, plus the exact three parts of the brainstem (midbrain, pons, medulla) that NEET tests repeatedly.

Your doubts, answered

Which part of the brain controls breathing and heartbeat?

The medulla oblongata. It controls respiration (breathing) and cardiovascular reflexes such as heart rate and blood pressure. It also controls gastric secretions. Do not confuse it with the cerebellum, which only handles balance and posture, not breathing.

What is the difference between cerebrum and cerebellum?

Cerebrum is the largest part and does thinking, memory, intelligence and voluntary actions. Cerebellum is a smaller part of the hindbrain that controls posture, balance and coordinated body movement. The names sound alike but the jobs are different, so read the spelling carefully in NEET questions.

What does the hypothalamus control?

The hypothalamus controls hunger, thirst, body temperature, and it makes releasing hormones. It has neurosecretory cells that link the nervous system to hormones. In NEET matching questions, hypothalamus is often paired with 'neurosecretory cells' or 'regulation of temperature, hunger and thirst'.

What is the function of the limbic system?

The limbic system regulates emotions such as excitement, pleasure, rage and fear, and also controls sexual behaviour, motivation and olfaction (smell). It works together with the hypothalamus. It does NOT control body movement, that is the cerebellum.

What are the parts of the brainstem?

The brainstem is made of the midbrain, pons and medulla oblongata. It connects the forebrain and spinal cord. A common trap is to include the cerebrum or thalamus in the brainstem, which is wrong.

What does the pons do and what connects the two cerebral hemispheres?

The pons is a hindbrain part that connects different regions of the brain and helps regulate breathing. The two cerebral hemispheres are connected by a nerve tract called the corpus callosum, not the pons.

⚠️ The NEET trap
Putting the cerebrum inside the brainstem, or saying the limbic system controls body movement.
Brainstem = midbrain + pons + medulla only. Limbic system controls emotions and sexual behaviour; movement/balance is the cerebellum's job.
🧠 NEET writes one WRONG pair among four correct ones (2018, 2024). The wrong pair usually swaps limbic-emotion with limbic-movement, or slips cerebrum into the brainstem.

Real NEET questions

2024

Match List I with List II: List I: A. Pons, B. Hypothalamus, C. Medulla, D. Cerebellum. List II: I. Provides additional space for neurons, regulates posture and balance, II. Controls respiration and gastric secretions, III. Connects different regions of the brain, IV. Neurosecretory cells. Choose the correct answer.

A · A-III, B-IV, C-II, D-I
B · A-I, B-III, C-II, D-IV
C · A-II, B-I, C-III, D-IV
D · A-II, B-III, C-I, D-IV
Solution: Pons connects brain regions (III), hypothalamus has neurosecretory cells (IV), medulla controls respiration and gastric secretions (II), and cerebellum regulates posture and balance (I). So A-III, B-IV, C-II, D-I.
2018

Which of the following structures or regions is incorrectly paired with its functions?

A · Hypothalamus : production of releasing hormones and regulation of temperature, hunger and thirst.
B · Limbic system : consists of fibre tracts that interconnect different regions of brain; controls movement.
C · Medulla oblongata : controls respiration and cardiovascular reflexes.
D · Corpus callosum : band of fibers connecting left and right cerebral hemispheres.
Solution: The limbic system controls emotions, sexual behaviour and motivation, NOT movement, and it is not just interconnecting fibre tracts. So the limbic system pairing is the incorrect one.
2023

The parts of human brain that help in regulation of sexual behaviour, expression of excitement, pleasure, rage, fear etc. are:

A · Limbic system & hypothalamus
B · Corpora quadrigemina & hippocampus
C · Brain stem & epithalamus
D · Corpus callosum and thalamus
Solution: The limbic system together with the hypothalamus regulates sexual behaviour and emotions like excitement, pleasure, rage and fear. So the answer is limbic system and hypothalamus.

Frequently asked

Is the thalamus part of the brainstem?

No. The thalamus is part of the forebrain and acts as a major relay/coordinating centre for sensory and motor signals. The brainstem is only midbrain, pons and medulla.

Which brain part is the largest?

The cerebrum is the largest part of the human brain. It fills most of the skull and handles thinking, memory and voluntary movement.

What connects the left and right cerebral hemispheres?

The corpus callosum, a thick band of nerve fibres (a nerve tract), connects the two cerebral hemispheres.

Which part controls posture and balance?

The cerebellum, a part of the hindbrain, controls posture, balance and coordinated muscle movement.

How should I revise brain parts for NEET quickly?

Make a two-column match table (part = function), practise the 2018, 2023 and 2024 matching PYQs, and focus on the common traps: brainstem parts, limbic vs cerebellum, and corpus callosum.
