Human Brain Overview: The Command and Control System
Biology · Neural Control and Coordination · NEET
The brain is the body's central information processing organ, so NCERT calls it the "command and control system." It is protected by the skull and three cranial meninges (outer dura mater, middle arachnoid, inner pia mater), and it is divided into three major parts: forebrain, midbrain and hindbrain. Memory hook: "DAP covers the brain, and Fore-Mid-Hind is the map."
The brain, protected by three meninges (dura, arachnoid, pia), is divided into forebrain, midbrain and hindbrain; the brainstem is only midbrain + pons + medulla (not cerebrum).
Your doubts, answered
What does NCERT mean when it calls the brain the 'command and control system'?
It means the brain is the central information processing organ. It controls voluntary movements, body balance, vital involuntary organs (lungs, heart, kidneys), thermoregulation, hunger and thirst, circadian (24-hour) rhythms, several endocrine glands and human behaviour. It is also the site for vision, hearing, speech, memory, intelligence, emotions and thoughts. This exact list is a common NEET one-liner.
What are the three coverings (meninges) of the brain and in what order?
From outside to inside: dura mater (outer), arachnoid (very thin middle), and pia mater (inner, in contact with brain tissue). Easy order hook: D-A-P (outer to inner). NEET often asks which membrane is outermost or which touches the brain tissue, so learn the direction.
What are the three major parts of the brain?
Forebrain, midbrain and hindbrain. Forebrain = cerebrum, thalamus, hypothalamus. Midbrain = between thalamus/hypothalamus and pons, has corpora quadrigemina. Hindbrain = pons, cerebellum, medulla. This is the overview map; each part is studied in detail on its own page.
Is the brainstem the same as the brain, and what is inside it?
No. The brainstem is only a connecting portion between the brain and spinal cord. Its three parts are midbrain, pons and medulla oblongata. The cerebrum and cerebellum are NOT part of the brainstem. This 'cerebrum is not in the brainstem' point is a repeat NEET trap.
Is the brain part of the central nervous system (CNS)?
Yes. The CNS = brain + spinal cord. Its coverings (dura mater, arachnoid, pia mater) are part of CNS protection. Structures like the pericardium (around the heart) are not part of the CNS, which is a classic 'odd one out' question.
⚠️ The NEET trap ✗ The brainstem consists of medulla oblongata, pons and cerebrum. ✓ The brainstem consists of midbrain, pons and medulla oblongata. The cerebrum belongs to the forebrain, not the brainstem. 🧠 Read the brainstem list word by word before choosing.
Real NEET questions
NEET 2023
Brainstem of human brain consists of:
A · Thalamus, Hypothalamus and Corpora quadrigemina
B · Amygdala, Hippocampus and Corpus Callosum
C · Mid-brain, Pons and Medulla Oblongata ✓
D · Forebrain, Cerebellum and Pons
Solution: NCERT states three major regions make up the brain stem: midbrain, pons and medulla oblongata. The brainstem connects the brain to the spinal cord, so option C is correct.
NEET 2024
Statement I: The cerebral hemispheres are connected by a nerve tract known as corpus callosum. Statement II: The brain stem consists of the medulla oblongata, pons and cerebrum. Choose the most appropriate answer.
A · Both Statement I and Statement II are incorrect.
B · Statement I is correct but Statement II is incorrect. ✓
C · Statement I is incorrect but Statement II is correct.
D · Both Statement I and Statement II are correct.
Solution: Statement I is correct: the two cerebral hemispheres are joined by the corpus callosum. Statement II is wrong: the brainstem is midbrain, pons and medulla oblongata, not cerebrum. So only Statement I is correct.

Why is the brain called the command and control system?
Because it is the central information processing organ that controls voluntary movement, body balance, vital involuntary organs, thermoregulation, hunger, thirst, circadian rhythms, endocrine glands and behaviour, and processes vision, hearing, speech, memory and emotions.
What is the correct order of the meninges of the brain?
From outside to inside: dura mater, arachnoid, pia mater. Pia mater is the innermost layer that touches the brain tissue.
What are the three major divisions of the human brain?
Forebrain, midbrain and hindbrain.
Does the brainstem include the cerebrum?
No. The brainstem contains only midbrain, pons and medulla oblongata. The cerebrum is part of the forebrain.
Is the brain a part of the central or peripheral nervous system?
The brain is part of the central nervous system (CNS), together with the spinal cord.
