What exactly does 'abiotic' mean?

Abiotic means non-living. It is the physical part of an organism's environment - the things that are not alive but still affect it. NCERT lists the main abiotic factors as temperature, water, light and soil. Biotic factors, in contrast, are the living things around an organism, like predators, parasites, competitors and food species. So a fish is affected by water temperature (abiotic) and by the bigger fish that eats it (biotic).

Why do abiotic factors decide where an organism lives?

Because the Earth's tilt and rotation create very different physical conditions in different places - hot deserts, cold mountains, deep oceans, rivers, hot springs. Each place has its own value of temperature, water, light and soil. An organism can survive only where these conditions match what its body can tolerate. This is why polar bears are found in cold regions and cactus in dry deserts, not the other way around.

What is the difference between an organism, population, community and biome?

These are levels of organisation in ecology. An organism is a single individual. A population is a group of the same species living in one area. A community is all the different populations living together. A biome is a very large region with a characteristic climate and vegetation, such as desert, rainforest or tundra. NCERT says ecology deals with organisms, populations, communities and biomes - and this chapter focuses on the population level.

Is temperature really the most important abiotic factor?

NCERT calls temperature the most ecologically relevant abiotic factor. It changes from the equator to the poles and from plains to high mountains, and it controls the working of enzymes inside the body. Because enzyme activity depends on temperature, it affects almost every life process, so temperature strongly limits where an organism can survive.

Why are there so many different types of environments on Earth?

The Earth is tilted on its axis and rotates, so different parts receive different amounts of sunlight through the year. This creates the annual variation in temperature and rainfall we call seasons, and it produces the major biomes (desert, rainforest, tundra, etc.). Within these large biomes there are many smaller habitats, each with its own set of abiotic conditions.
