What is Ecology? Levels of Biological Organisation (Organism, Population, Community, Biome)

Biology · Organisms and Populations · NEET

Ecology is the study of how organisms interact with each other and with their physical (abiotic) surroundings. NCERT says ecologists study nature at four levels: organism, population, community, and biome. Memory hook: "O-P-C-B" grows bigger each step - one body, then a group of the same species, then all species together, then a huge climate zone.

The four NCERT levels of ecological organisation increase in scale: a single organism, a same-species population, a multi-species community, and a large climate-based biome.

Your doubts, answered

Is ecology just about the environment and pollution?

No. In NCERT class 12, ecology is defined as the study of relationships (interactions) between living organisms and their environment. Pollution and conservation come under environmental issues and biodiversity, not the core definition. For NEET, ecology = interactions at four levels: organism, population, community, biome. The organism is the basic unit of study.

What is the difference between a population and a community?

A population is a group of individuals of the SAME species living in a defined area (for example, all lotus plants in a pond). A community includes populations of DIFFERENT species living and interacting in that area (all plants, fish, insects, and microbes in the pond together). One species = population; many species = community. NEET often flips these two in a single line to trap you.

Is a biome the same as the biosphere?

No, and this is a common mix-up. A biome is a large region defined by its climate and dominant vegetation, such as desert, rainforest, or tundra. The biosphere is the sum of ALL biomes on Earth - the entire zone of life. NCERT lists biome (not biosphere) as the fourth level in the Organisms and Populations chapter. Biosphere is bigger and belongs more to the Ecosystem chapter.

Why is the organism called the basic unit of ecology?

Because every higher level is built from organisms. NCERT states that at the organism level, ecology asks how a single individual is adapted to its habitat in terms of survival and reproduction. Without the individual organism responding to abiotic factors like temperature, water, light, and soil, populations and communities could not exist. So the organism is the starting point of ecological study.

Is species one of the four levels of organisation?

No. The four NCERT levels are organism, population, community, and biome. 'Species' is a category of classification, not a level in this ecological hierarchy. A population is made of individuals of one species, but the level itself is called population, not species. Students lose marks by writing 'species' as a level - stick to O-P-C-B.

⚠️ The NEET trap
Marking 'biosphere' as the fourth and largest level ecologists study in the Organisms and Populations chapter.
NCERT lists the fourth level as BIOME (a large climatic zone like desert or rainforest), not biosphere. Biosphere is the sum of all biomes and is discussed with ecosystems.
🧠 Chapter order: Organism -> Population -> Community -> BIOME. If the option says biosphere for THIS chapter's hierarchy, it is the distractor.

Frequently asked

Who is called the father of ecology?

Reiter coined the term 'ecology' and Ernst Haeckel is often credited with defining it. For NEET, focus on the NCERT definition - the study of interactions among organisms and their environment - rather than dates or names, as questions test the concept, not history.

What are the four levels of biological organisation in ecology as per NCERT?

Organism, population, community, and biome. They increase in scale: a single individual, then a same-species group, then a multi-species assembly, then a large climate-defined region.

What is the difference between habitat and biome?

A habitat is the specific place where an organism lives (for example, the bark of a tree). A biome is a very large region defined by climate and vegetation (for example, tropical rainforest) that contains many habitats.

Which level is the basic unit of ecological study?

The organism (individual) is the basic unit. NCERT begins the chapter by studying how a single organism copes with abiotic factors, then builds up to populations.
