Abscisic Acid (ABA): The Stress Hormone

Biology · Plant Growth and Development · NEET

Abscisic acid (ABA) is a plant growth inhibitor made from carotenoids. Its main jobs are: it closes stomata during water stress, induces seed dormancy, and slows growth and metabolism. Because it protects plants during dry and harsh conditions, NCERT calls it the "stress hormone." Memory hook: ABA = "Anti-growth, Bud/seed sleep, and Anti-water-loss."

ABA is a carotenoid-derived growth inhibitor. Its three key NEET functions: closes stomata to save water, induces seed dormancy (inhibits germination), and increases stress tolerance. It acts as an antagonist to gibberellins.

Your doubts, answered

Why is ABA called the stress hormone?

ABA is called the stress hormone because it helps a plant survive bad conditions like drought, cold, and injury. During water shortage, ABA closes the stomata so the plant loses less water. It also increases the plant's tolerance to many kinds of stress. So ABA is the hormone that switches the plant into 'survival mode' when the environment is harsh. This exact NCERT line is a favourite for NEET.

Does ABA open or close stomata?

ABA closes stomata. When the plant is short of water, ABA stimulates the closure (shutting) of stomata so that water is not lost through them. Students often confuse this and think ABA opens stomata, but that is wrong. Remember: stress hormone = shut the doors = close stomata to save water.

Is ABA a growth promoter or a growth inhibitor?

ABA is a growth inhibitor. NCERT says it acts as a general plant growth inhibitor and an inhibitor of plant metabolism. It also inhibits seed germination. So it belongs to the inhibitor group of PGRs, along with dormancy and abscission activities. A NEET 2025 statement question tested exactly this: 'Abscisic acid is a plant growth promoter' is FALSE.

Does ABA cause seed dormancy or germination?

ABA causes seed dormancy, not germination. It induces dormancy, which helps seeds withstand desiccation (drying) and other unfavourable conditions. It also plays a role in seed development and maturation. In contrast, gibberellin (GA) breaks dormancy and promotes germination. So ABA and GA act as antagonists here.

How is ABA different from gibberellin (GA)?

ABA and gibberellins are antagonists, meaning they have opposite effects. GA promotes growth, breaks seed dormancy, and helps germination and stem elongation. ABA inhibits growth, induces seed dormancy, and inhibits germination. In most situations NCERT states ABA acts as an antagonist to GAs. This antagonism is a common NEET matching-question point.

⚠️ The NEET trap
ABA promotes seed germination and opens stomata to help the plant grow faster.
ABA inhibits seed germination and closes stomata to reduce water loss. It is a growth inhibitor and the stress hormone.
🧠 NTA loves to flip ABA's actions. Every ABA action is 'anti': anti-growth, anti-germination, anti-water-loss (closes stomata). If an option makes ABA sound like a promoter, it is wrong.

Real NEET questions

NEET 2020

Which of the following is not an inhibitory substance governing seed dormancy?

A · Phenolic acid
B · Para-ascorbic acid
C · Gibberellic acid
D · Abscisic acid
Solution: Gibberellic acid breaks dormancy and promotes growth, so it is NOT an inhibitory substance. Phenolic acid, para-ascorbic acid and abscisic acid are inhibitory substances that enforce dormancy; ABA induces dormancy so seeds withstand desiccation.
NEET 2025

Read the statements: A. Parthenocarpy can be induced by auxins. B. PGRs can be involved in promotion as well as inhibition of growth. C. Dedifferentiation is a pre-requisite for re-differentiation. D. Abscisic acid is a plant growth promoter. E. Apical dominance promotes the growth of lateral buds. Choose the option with all correct statements.

A · A, D, E only
B · B, D, E only
C · A, B, C only
D · A, C, E only
Solution: A, B and C are correct. D is wrong because ABA is a growth inhibitor, not a promoter. E is wrong because apical dominance inhibits lateral bud growth. So only A, B, C are correct.
NEET 2026

Match List-I (Growth Regulator) with List-II: A. 2,4-D B. GA3 C. Kinetin D. ABA | I. Brewing industry II. Stimulation of stomatal closure III. Herbicide IV. Nutrient mobilisation

A · A-III, B-I, C-IV, D-II
B · A-IV, B-III, C-II, D-I
C · A-I, B-IV, C-III, D-II
D · A-I, B-II, C-IV, D-III
Solution: 2,4-D is a herbicide (III); GA3 speeds the malting process in brewing (I); Kinetin (a cytokinin) promotes nutrient mobilisation (IV); ABA stimulates stomatal closure (II). Only option A pairs all four correctly.

Frequently asked

What are the main functions of abscisic acid?

ABA closes stomata during water stress, induces and maintains seed dormancy, inhibits seed germination, acts as a general growth and metabolism inhibitor, and increases the plant's tolerance to stresses. It also has a role in seed development and maturation.

From what is abscisic acid derived?

According to NCERT, abscisic acid is a derivative of carotenoids. Remember the chemical origins: auxin=indole, cytokinin=adenine, ABA=carotenoid, gibberellin=terpene, ethylene=gas.

Why was it named abscisic acid?

Three inhibitors discovered separately, named inhibitor-B, abscission II and dormin, were later found to be chemically identical and named abscisic acid (ABA). The name reflects its early discovered roles in abscission and dormancy.

Is ABA an antagonist of any hormone?

Yes. In most situations ABA acts as an antagonist to gibberellins (GAs). GA promotes growth and germination, while ABA inhibits growth and induces dormancy, so their effects oppose each other.

How does ABA help during drought?

During water shortage, ABA stimulates stomatal closure so the plant loses less water through the stomata, and it raises the plant's tolerance to stress. This water-saving action is why ABA is called the stress hormone.
