Ethylene: The Gaseous Plant Growth Regulator

Biology · Plant Growth and Development · NEET

Ethylene is the only plant hormone that is a gas (C2H4). Made mostly by ripening fruits and ageing (senescing) tissues, it ripens fruits, drops old leaves and flowers, and makes female flowers in cucumber. Memory hook: "Ethylene = the RIPE gas" - it comes from a ripe fruit and makes other fruits ripe too.

Ethylene is a gas released by ripening fruits and ageing tissue. It drives fruit ripening, leaf and flower drop, female flowers in cucumber, deep-water rice elongation, and root hair growth. Ethephon is its practical source in farming.

Your doubts, answered

Is ethylene a growth promoter or a growth inhibitor?

NCERT says ethylene can fit either group, but it is largely an inhibitor of growth activities. It promotes senescence (ageing), abscission (organ drop) and dormancy - these are inhibitory. So for NEET, remember: ethylene is grouped with inhibitors even though it does a few promoting jobs like fruit ripening and root hair growth.

Which hormone is responsible for fruit ripening?

Ethylene. It is highly effective in fruit ripening and raises the respiration rate during ripening. This sudden rise in respiration is called the respiratory climacteric. This is why one ripe fruit gives off ethylene gas and speeds up ripening of nearby fruits.

Which hormone promotes female flowers in cucumber?

Ethylene. It promotes female flowers in cucumbers, which increases the yield (more female flowers means more fruits). This exact point was asked in NEET 2022 and again in the NEET 2023 match-the-column question, so it is high-value for NEET.

What is ethephon and why is it used?

Ethephon is the most widely used source of ethylene. In water it is absorbed and moved inside the plant and slowly releases ethylene. It hastens fruit ripening in tomatoes and apples, accelerates abscission (thinning) in cotton, cherry and walnut, and promotes female flowers in cucumber.

What does ethylene do in deep-water rice?

Ethylene promotes rapid internode and petiole elongation in deep-water rice plants. This helps the leaves and upper shoot stay above rising water so the plant does not drown. NEET 2023 asked this directly - the answer is ethylene, not GA3.

Does ethylene help roots at all?

Yes. Ethylene promotes root growth and root hair formation, which increases the absorption surface of the plant. This is one of its few growth-promoting roles, so students often forget it - keep it in mind for NEET matching questions.

⚠️ The NEET trap
Ethylene increases sugarcane and grape stalk length, so it is used to boost their yield.
Gibberellin increases sugarcane stem length and grape stalk length. Ethylene increases yield in cucumber (female flowers) and pineapple (flowering with auxin). Do not mix the two.
🧠 Stalk/stem length = Gibberellin. Female flowers + ripening = Ethylene.

Real NEET questions

NEET 2022

Production of Cucumber has increased manifold in recent years. Application of which of the following phytohormones has resulted in this increased yield as the hormone is known to produce female flowers in the plants?

A · ABA
B · Gibberellin
C · Ethylene
D · Cytokinin
Solution: Ethylene promotes the formation of female flowers in cucumber. More female flowers means more fruits, so yield rises. ABA is a stress inhibitor, gibberellin elongates the stem, and cytokinin promotes cell division - none of these makes female flowers.
NEET 2023

Which hormone promotes internode/petiole elongation in deep water rice?

A · GA3
B · Kinetin
C · Ethylene
D · 2, 4-D
Solution: Ethylene promotes rapid internode and petiole elongation in deep-water rice, keeping the leaves and upper shoot above rising water. GA3 elongates the axis in other cases, kinetin is a cytokinin, and 2,4-D is an auxin herbicide - so the deep-water-rice answer is ethylene.
NEET 2019

It takes very long time for pineapple plants to produce flowers. Which combination of hormones can be applied to artificially induce flowering in pineapple plants throughout the year to increase yield?

A · Auxin and Ethylene
B · Gibberellin and Cytokinin
C · Gibberellin and Abscisic acid
D · Cytokinin and Abscisic acid
Solution: Both auxin and ethylene induce flowering in pineapple, so this pair is used to force year-round flowering and boost yield. The other combinations do not trigger pineapple flowering.

Frequently asked

Is ethylene the only gaseous plant hormone?

Yes. Among the five main plant growth regulators, ethylene is the only one that is a gas (C2H4). This makes it easy to spread from fruit to fruit through the air.

What is the respiratory climacteric?

During fruit ripening, ethylene raises the respiration rate. This sharp rise in respiration during ripening is called the respiratory climacteric.

Does ethylene break dormancy?

Yes. Ethylene breaks seed and bud dormancy, starts germination in peanut seeds, and causes sprouting of potato tubers.

What is apical hook formation?

In dicot seedlings coming out of soil, ethylene causes horizontal growth, swelling of the axis, and a bent apical hook that protects the tender shoot tip as it pushes up through the soil.

Why is ethylene called one of the most widely used PGRs in agriculture?

Because it controls many processes - ripening, abscission, flowering, female flower formation - it is heavily used, usually through its source compound ethephon.
