Are pistil and carpel the same, or different?

For NEET, treat pistil and carpel as the same unit — one female reproductive unit made of stigma, style and ovary. The whole female part of the flower (all pistils together) is called the gynoecium. So carpel = pistil = one unit; gynoecium = the total of all such units in one flower.

What is the difference between gynoecium and pistil?

Gynoecium is the whole female part of the flower. A pistil is one unit inside it. If a flower has only one pistil it is monocarpellary; if it has more than one pistil it is multicarpellary. So gynoecium is the group, pistil is the member.

What do syncarpous and apocarpous mean?
