What is the basic structure of connective tissue?
Every connective tissue has two parts: (1) cells, which are few and scattered, and (2) intercellular matrix, which is large in amount. The matrix has a ground substance (jelly-like or fluid or solid) plus fibres. This is the exact opposite of epithelium, where cells are packed tightly with almost no matrix. So when NEET says 'abundant extracellular matrix', it is pointing to connective tissue.

Why are the cells in connective tissue placed far apart?
Because the cells make and release a large amount of matrix around themselves. This matrix (ground substance + fibres) pushes the cells apart and holds them in place. The matrix, not the cells, does most of the job: it binds, supports, packs organs, stores fat or carries blood. So 'few cells, lots of matrix' is the identity of connective tissue.
Which cells are found in connective tissue?
Common connective tissue cells are fibroblasts (make fibres and matrix), macrophages (eat germs and debris), and mast cells (release heparin and histamine). Adipose tissue has fat-storing adipocytes. Blood has RBCs, WBCs and platelets. Remember: mast cells are a marker of loose areolar connective tissue — a repeated NEET point.
What are the fibres in connective tissue matrix?
Three fibre types: collagen fibres (white, strong, resist pulling), elastic fibres (yellow, stretchy), and reticular fibres (fine, form networks). Collagen gives tendons and ligaments their strength; elastic fibres let skin and vessel walls stretch. Fibres are made by fibroblasts and lie inside the ground substance.
⚠️ The NEET trap ✗ Blood is a fluid, so it cannot be a connective tissue; and neuroglia, being supporting cells, must be connective tissue. ✓ Blood IS a specialised connective tissue (plasma is its fluid matrix, with cells embedded in it). Neuroglia are supporting cells of NEURAL tissue, NOT connective tissue. 🧠 Connective tissue is defined by an abundant MATRIX with cells embedded in it — the matrix can be fluid (blood), solid (bone) or jelly (areolar). 'Support' alone does not make a cell connective; check where it lives. Neuroglia live in the nervous system, so they are neural.
