External Morphology of Frog

Biology · Structural Organisation in Animals · NEET

The frog's body has only two parts, the head and the trunk, with no neck and no tail. Its skin is smooth, moist and slippery (helps it breathe), the eyes are covered by a nictitating membrane, a tympanum works as the ear, and the webbed hind limbs end in 5 digits while the forelimbs end in 4. Memory hook: "Head-Trunk, no neck no tail; Hind 5, Fore 4."

Your doubts, answered

How many digits are on the frog's hind limbs and forelimbs?

The hind limbs end in FIVE digits and the forelimbs end in FOUR digits. NCERT states the hind limbs are larger and more muscular than the forelimbs. A quick trick: Fore = 4 (both start after F), Hind = 5. Only the hind limb digits are webbed to help in swimming.

Does a frog have a neck and a tail?

No. The adult frog's body is divisible into only the head and the trunk. A neck and tail are absent. (The tail is present in the tadpole larva but is lost during metamorphosis.) NEET often tests this exact line, so remember: head + trunk only.

What is the nictitating membrane and what does it do?

The eyes of the frog are bulged and covered by a transparent nictitating membrane. It protects the eye while the frog is underwater, letting the frog keep its eyes covered yet still see. Do not confuse it with the eyelid; NCERT names the nictitating membrane, not simple eyelids.

Is the tympanum the same as a human external ear?

No. The frog has no external ear (no pinna). Instead, a membranous tympanum is seen on either side of the eyes; it receives sound signals. So externally you can see only the tympanum, which acts as the ear.

Why is the frog's skin always moist and slippery?

The skin is smooth and slippery because of mucus and is always kept moist. This is important because the frog absorbs water through its skin (it never drinks water) and also carries out cutaneous respiration (skin breathing). A dry skin would stop gas exchange.

What is the colour difference between the dorsal and ventral sides?

The dorsal (upper) side is generally olive green with dark irregular spots, which helps in camouflage. The ventral (lower) side is uniformly pale yellow. NEET can ask you to match dorsal vs ventral colour, so keep them separate.

⚠️ The NEET trap
Forelimbs of frog end in five digits and hind limbs in four digits.
Hind limbs end in FIVE digits (webbed, larger, muscular) and forelimbs end in FOUR digits.
🧠 NTA swaps the 5 and the 4. Lock it: Fore=4, Hind=5, and only the hind digits are webbed for swimming.

Real NEET questions

NEET 2025

Which of the following statement is correct about location of the male frog copulatory pad?

A · Second digit of fore limb
B · First digit of the fore limb
C · First and Second digit of fore limb
D · First digit of hind limb
Solution: The copulatory pad is present on the FIRST digit of the FORE limb of the male frog (along with the sound-producing vocal sacs). Both structures are absent in the female. NCERT (Class XI, Ch 7): 'Male frogs can be distinguished by the presence of sound producing vocal sacs and also a copulatory pad on the first digit of the fore limbs.'

Frequently asked

Which species of frog is common in India?

Rana tigrina, the Indian bullfrog, is the most common species found in India. It belongs to class Amphibia of phylum Chordata.

Are the webbed digits on the fore or hind limbs?

On the hind limbs. The hind feet have webbed digits that help in swimming; the hind limbs are also larger and more muscular than the forelimbs.

Is the frog cold-blooded?

Yes. The frog is a poikilotherm (cold-blooded); its body temperature changes with the temperature of the surroundings. It can also change colour for camouflage.

How does the frog take in water if it never drinks?

The frog absorbs water directly through its moist skin; it does not drink water by mouth. This is why the skin must stay wet.

What structures show sexual dimorphism externally in the frog?

Male frogs have vocal sacs and a copulatory pad on the first digit of the forelimb, both absent in females. This is covered in detail on the Sexual Dimorphism in Frog page.
