No, they are not the same, but they overlap a lot. Taxonomy covers four basic processes: characterisation (describing an organism), identification, classification and nomenclature (naming). Systematics includes all these AND one extra big idea: it takes into account the evolutionary relationships between organisms. So think of it this way: systematics = taxonomy + evolutionary relationships. For NEET, the safest single-line answer is that systematics considers evolutionary relationships, while taxonomy is mainly about naming and classifying.
The word systematics comes from the Latin word 'systema', which means the systematic arrangement of organisms. So systematics literally means arranging organisms in an orderly way. This is why the study of the kinds and diversity of organisms and the relationships among them was first called systematics. Remember the root word 'systema' because NEET can directly ask its origin.
Carolus Linnaeus used Systema Naturae as the title of his publication. This is the reason the field connected to 'systema' is called systematics. It matters for NEET because a common one-mark fact is: Linnaeus -> Systema Naturae. Do not mix this up with binomial nomenclature (also given by Linnaeus) or with Whittaker's Five Kingdom classification.
NCERT says that characterisation, identification, classification and nomenclature are the processes that are basic to taxonomy. In simple words: (1) characterisation = studying the features/structure of the organism, (2) identification = finding out what the organism is, (3) classification = grouping it into categories, and (4) nomenclature = giving it a correct scientific name. A quick memory word is CICN. All four together make up taxonomy.
The scope of systematics was later enlarged to include identification, nomenclature and classification. On top of these, systematics also studies how organisms are related through evolution (evolutionary relationships). Because it adds the evolution angle to all the naming and grouping work, systematics is treated as the wider, more complete field. Taxonomy sits inside this bigger picture.
By its strict NCERT definition, taxonomy is built on characterisation, identification, classification and nomenclature. The line that clearly says 'takes into account evolutionary relationships between organisms' is written for systematics, not taxonomy. So in NEET, if a statement links evolutionary relationships to a word, that word should be systematics. This tiny wording difference is a favourite trap.
