Dimensional Analysis: Converting Units the Factor-Label Way

Chemistry · Some Basic Concepts Of Chemistry · NEET

Dimensional analysis (also called the factor-label method or unit factor method) is a way to change one unit into another by multiplying by fractions that equal 1. Each fraction (called a unit factor) is written so the unwanted unit cancels and the unit you want stays. Memory hook: "Keep the unit you want on top, cancel the rest."
Factor-Label Method: convert 3 inch to cm3 ingiven×2.54 cm1 inunit factor = 1=7.62 cmanswer"in" (top)"in" (bottom) → cancelsKeep the unityou want on top;cancel the rest.
The factor-label method: multiply the given quantity by a unit factor (a fraction equal to 1) arranged so the unwanted unit cancels and the desired unit stays. Here 3 inch becomes 7.62 cm.

Your doubts, answered

What exactly is dimensional analysis in simple words?

It is a method to convert a measurement from one unit to another without changing its actual value. You multiply the given quantity by a fraction that equals 1, such as (2.54 cm / 1 inch). Because the fraction equals 1, the real amount does not change, but the unit does. In NCERT this same method is called the factor label method, unit factor method, or dimensional analysis. All three names mean the same thing.

How do I decide which unit factor to use?

Look at the unit you want to remove and the unit you want to keep. Write the conversion fact as a fraction so that the unit you want to cancel is placed opposite (top vs bottom) to where it already is, and the unit you want in your answer stays. Example: to change 3 inch to cm, the given 'inch' is on top, so put 'inch' on the bottom of your factor: 3 in x (2.54 cm / 1 in) = 7.62 cm. The 'in' cancels and 'cm' remains.

Why does multiplying by a unit factor not change the value?

Because both parts of the fraction are the same real length, mass, or time. For example 2.54 cm and 1 inch are the exact same length, so 2.54 cm / 1 in = 1. Multiplying any number by 1 does not change it. This is why the method is safe: only the unit changes, never the physical quantity.

How do I convert cm3 to m3 or cm3 to dm3?

Start from 1 m = 100 cm, so (1 m / 100 cm) = 1. For volume you must cube the whole factor: (1 m / 100 cm)^3 = 1 m^3 / 10^6 cm^3. So to change cm^3 to m^3 you multiply by (1 m^3 / 10^6 cm^3). NCERT shows this exact idea when it converts 2 L of milk to m^3. Remember: for area square the factor, for volume cube it.

Can I multiply several unit factors in one step?

Yes. NCERT converts 2 days to seconds in one line: 2 day x (24 h / 1 day) x (60 min / 1 h) x (60 s / 1 min) = 172800 s. Each factor cancels one unit and hands over the next, until only seconds are left. Line up the factors so each unwanted unit cancels the one before it.

How is dimensional analysis used to convert molarity to molality?

You use unit reasoning with density. Take 1 L of solution, find its mass using density (mass = density x volume), subtract the mass of solute to get mass of solvent, then divide moles of solute by kg of solvent. Every step is really a unit conversion (mL to g using g/mL, g to kg by 1000). This is a very common NEET calculation, so practice the density step carefully.

⚠️ The NEET trap
Flipping the unit factor upside down, e.g. writing 3 in x (1 in / 2.54 cm) so the units do NOT cancel and you divide instead of multiply.
Always place the unit factor so the unwanted unit cancels. 3 in x (2.54 cm / 1 in) = 7.62 cm. Check that only the desired unit is left before you calculate the number.
🧠 If the units do not cancel to give your target unit, your factor is upside down. Fix the fraction, then do the maths.

Real NEET questions

NEET 2018

In which of the following is the number of water molecules maximum?

A · 0.00224 L of water vapour at 1 atm and 273 K
B · 0.18 g of water
C · 18 mL of water
D · 10^-3 mol of water
Solution: Convert every option to moles using unit factors, then compare (molecules = moles x N_A). A: 0.00224 L / 22.4 L mol^-1 = 10^-4 mol. B: 0.18 g / 18 g mol^-1 = 10^-2 mol. C: 18 mL x 1 g mL^-1 (density of water) = 18 g, then 18 g / 18 g mol^-1 = 1 mol. D: 10^-3 mol. Option C (1 mol) has the most molecules. Notice how each step is a unit conversion: L to mol, g to mol, and mL to g using density.
NEET 2023 Phase 2

The density of a 1 M solution of a compound X is 1.25 g mL^-1. The molality of the solution is (molar mass of X = 85 g mol^-1)

A · 1.165 m
B · 0.858 m
C · 0.705 m
D · 1.208 m
Solution: Take 1 L (1000 mL) of solution, which contains 1 mol of X. Convert volume to mass using density: mass of solution = 1000 mL x 1.25 g mL^-1 = 1250 g. Mass of solute = 1 mol x 85 g mol^-1 = 85 g. Mass of solvent = 1250 - 85 = 1165 g = 1.165 kg (unit factor: 1 kg / 1000 g). Molality = moles of solute / kg of solvent = 1 / 1.165 = 0.858 m. Every step is a unit conversion done by the factor-label method.

Frequently asked

Are factor-label method, unit factor method and dimensional analysis the same thing?

Yes. NCERT lists all three names for the same method of converting units by multiplying with fractions that equal 1. In the exam any of these names may be used, so treat them as identical.

Do I square or cube the unit factor for area and volume?

Square the whole factor for area (units of length^2) and cube it for volume (units of length^3). For example (1 m / 100 cm)^3 converts cm^3 to m^3. Forgetting to cube is a common mistake.

Why is dimensional analysis important for NEET?

Almost every numerical in Some Basic Concepts of Chemistry, like mole, molarity, molality, and density problems, needs you to convert units correctly. Cancelling units also lets you check if your setup is right before you calculate, which saves marks and time.

How do I check my answer using dimensional analysis?

Before putting in numbers, cancel the units and see if only your target unit remains. If the leftover unit is wrong, your unit factors are set up incorrectly. This quick check catches many silly errors in the exam.
