A homogeneous mixture has a uniform composition throughout. The particles are mixed so evenly that every part looks the same and you cannot see the different components. A heterogeneous mixture does not have a uniform composition. The components are not spread evenly, so different parts look different and you can often see or point out the separate components. NCERT gives sugar solution and air as homogeneous, and salt-and-sugar mix, or grains and pulses with some dirt, as heterogeneous.
Clean, dry air is a homogeneous mixture. It contains gases like nitrogen, oxygen, argon and carbon dioxide mixed so evenly that the composition is the same in every part of the sample.
