Nucleons are the particles inside the nucleus of an atom. There are only two kinds: protons and neutrons. So the mass number A = number of protons + number of neutrons. Memory hook: "NUCLEON = NUCLEus ON the inside," and only the two heavy particles (p and n) live there, never the light electron.

What exactly is a nucleon? Is it a proton or a neutron?

A nucleon is the general name for any particle that sits inside the nucleus. Both protons and neutrons are nucleons. So "nucleon" is like a family name, and "proton" and "neutron" are the two members. When a question says "number of nucleons," it just means protons + neutrons added together.

Is the electron a nucleon too?

No. This is the most common mistake. Electrons move around outside the nucleus, so they are NOT nucleons. Only protons and neutrons are nucleons. Remember: nucleons live IN the nucleus; electrons live OUTSIDE it. NEET often tries to trap you here.

Is the number of nucleons the same as the mass number (A)?

Yes. Mass number A is defined as the total number of nucleons, that is protons + neutrons. A = Z + N, where Z = number of protons (atomic number) and N = number of neutrons. Electrons are almost massless, so they are not counted in A. This is why A is a whole number.

What is the difference between a nucleon and the nucleus?

The nucleus is the tiny centre of the atom. The nucleons are the particles that make up that centre. So the nucleus is the "box" and the nucleons (protons and neutrons) are the "things inside the box." One nucleus contains many nucleons.

How do I find the number of nucleons from a symbol like the Lu-175 example?

Look at the top-left number in the symbol (A/Z X). The top number is the mass number A = total nucleons. For Lu-175, A = 175, so there are 175 nucleons. To split them: protons = Z (bottom number = 71), and neutrons = A - Z = 175 - 71 = 104. So 71 protons + 104 neutrons = 175 nucleons.

Counting electrons as nucleons, or thinking neutrons = mass number. For Lu-175 a student picks neutrons = 175.
Only protons + neutrons are nucleons. Neutrons = A - Z = 175 - 71 = 104, not 175. Total nucleons = 175.
