ψ (the wave function) by itself has no direct physical meaning. It is just a mathematical answer from the Schrodinger equation and it can be positive, negative, or zero. ψ² is different: it is the probability density, which tells you the chance of finding the electron at a point. So ψ is the raw math answer, and ψ² is the useful physical picture.
Because it is a square. Squaring any number, whether positive or negative, always gives a positive answer (for example, (-3)² = 9). A probability can never be negative, so nature uses ψ², not ψ. NCERT states clearly: |ψ|² is probability density and is always positive.
It is proportional to ψ², not ψ. This is a very common trap. The NCERT line is: 'The probability of finding an electron at a point within an atom is proportional to the square of the orbital wave function, i.e. |ψ|².' If a statement says probability is proportional to ψ, it is WRONG.
ψ² at a point tells you how likely the electron is to be found right there. Where ψ² is large, the electron is very likely to be present. Where ψ² is small, the electron is rarely found. Where ψ² = 0, the electron is never found (this special point is called a node).
Probability density (ψ²) is the chance per unit tiny volume at ONE point. Probability is the total chance in a real region of space, found by adding up ψ² over that whole volume. For NEET, just remember ψ² = probability density at a point.
Because ψ² is what we can actually observe and measure. From the value of ψ² at different points, we can draw the shape of an orbital and predict the region where the electron is most likely to be found. NEET tests this exact idea, often as true/false statements about ψ vs ψ².
