NEET 2022 · BiologyPrevious Year Question
A dehydration reaction links two glucose molecules to produce maltose. If the formula for glucose is C6H12O6 then what is the formula for maltose?
Answer: (C) C12H22O11. Answer: (C) C12H22O11.
- A.C12H20O10
- B.C12H24O12
- C.C12H22O11✓
- D.C12H24O11
Correct Answer
(C) C12H22O11
Solution & Explanation
Answer: (C) C12H22O11. Solution: Maltose is a disaccharide formed when two glucose molecules (each C6H12O6) join by a glycosidic bond through a dehydration (condensation) reaction. Adding the two glucose formulae gives C12H24O12, and removing one water molecule (H2O) lost during dehydration gives C12H22O11. This loss of one water molecule on linking two sugars is the basis of glycosidic-bond formation in carbohydrates. NCERT Reference: Ch 9, p.110, line ~32 — "Polysaccharides are long chains of sugars. They are threads (literally a cotton thread) containing different monosaccharides as building blocks."
