NEET 2023 Phase 2 · BiologyPrevious Year Question

Identify the fossil of man who showed the following characteristics. (A) Brain capacity of 1400 cc (B) Used hides to protect their body (C) Buried their dead bodies In the light of above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below:

Answer: (D) Neanderthal man. Answer: (D) Neanderthal man.

  1. A.Homo habilis
  2. B.Australopithecus
  3. C.Homo erectus
  4. D.Neanderthal man

Correct Answer

(D) Neanderthal man

Solution & Explanation

Answer: (D) Neanderthal man. The Neanderthal man had a brain size of about 1400 cc, used hides to protect their body and buried their dead—exactly the three characteristics listed. Homo habilis (650–800 cc) and Australopithecus had much smaller brains, and Homo erectus had a brain of around 900 cc, so none of them fit the 1400 cc / hides / burial profile. NCERT Reference: Ch 6 Evolution, p.125, lines 6–8: "The Neanderthal man with a brain size of 1400cc lived in near east and central Asia between 1,00,000-40,000 years back. They used hides to protect their body and buried their dead."
