How NEET Marks to Rank Conversion Works

NEET rank is determined by your total score out of 720 marks. Since over 24 lakh students appear for NEET each year, even a small difference in marks can translate to a large difference in rank. For example, the difference between 600 and 620 marks is roughly 5,000 ranks — which can mean the difference between a government college and a private one.

The conversion from marks to rank is not perfectly linear. At higher score ranges (650+), each mark gained results in a bigger rank jump because there are fewer students scoring in that range. At lower score ranges (below 500), rank changes per mark are smaller because of the large concentration of students.

When two or more students score the same marks, NTA uses tie-breaking criteria: first, higher marks in Biology; then higher marks in Chemistry; then fewer incorrect answers; and finally, age (the older candidate gets the higher rank). This means your subject-wise score distribution matters, not just the total.
