Speed is a scalar. It tells you only how fast something moves, like 40 m/s, with no direction. Velocity is the vector version: 40 m/s toward the east. So speed = magnitude of velocity, but speed carries no direction by itself.
Distance (also called path length) is a scalar. It is the total length of the path travelled and only has a magnitude, like 12 m. Displacement is the vector: the straight-line change in position with a direction, like 12 m north.
Displacement needs a direction to be complete because it is the change in position from start to end (for example, +5 m or -5 m along a line). Distance only counts how much path you covered, so a single positive number is enough. That is why displacement can be zero while distance is not, when you return to the start.
Acceleration is a vector. It is the rate of change of velocity, and velocity has direction, so acceleration also has direction. A car slowing down has acceleration pointing opposite to its motion (retardation), which is why the sign of acceleration matters in kinematics equations.
Time is a scalar. It has only a magnitude (like 3 s) and no direction. In NEET, treat time, mass, temperature, distance, speed and energy as scalars, and displacement, velocity, acceleration and force as vectors.
Yes. In one-dimensional motion, we replace full direction arrows with a + or - sign along the chosen axis. A displacement of -4 m means 4 m in the negative direction. So even a signed number in 1D is still a vector, because that sign encodes direction.

Ask one question: does this quantity have a direction? If the number alone is complete (like 30 kg or 5 s), it is a scalar. If you must add a direction for it to make full sense (like 5 m/s upward), it is a vector.

Many NEET questions test whether you can separate speed from velocity or distance from displacement. Mixing them gives wrong answers, especially in average velocity, average speed, and problems where a body returns to its starting point.
