📚 Practice Concept
📖 NCERT Source

Have you ever touched the skin of frog? The skin is smooth and slippery due to the presence of mucus. The skin is always maintained in a moist condition. The colour of dorsal side of body is generally olive green with dark irregular spots. On the ventral side the skin is uniformly pale yellow. The frog never drinks water but absorb it through the skin.

Which of the following statements regarding the morphology and physiology of a frog are correct? S1: Webbed digits on hind limbs are primarily adaptations for efficient swimming in water. S2: During aestivation and hibernation, frogs solely rely on pulmonary respiration for gaseous exchange. S3: The skin of a frog is always maintained moist due to mucus glands and is crucial for absorbing water, but not for drinking. S4: Male frogs possess sound-producing vocal sacs and copulatory pads on the first digit of the fore limbs, which are absent in females. S5: Frogs are homeothermic animals, meaning their body temperature remains constant despite environmental variations.

Correct answer: A S1, S3 and S4 are correct

Let's evaluate each statement regarding the morphology and physiology of a frog based on NCERT content. S1: "Feet have webbed digits that help in swimming." This statement is correct, as webbed digits are an adaptation for efficient swimming. S2: "During aestivation and hibernation gaseous exchange takes place through skin." This statement is incorrect. Frogs rely on cutaneous respiration (through skin), not solely pulmonary respiration, during these periods. S3: "The skin is smooth and slippery due to the presence of mucus. The skin is always maintained in a moist condition. ... The frog never drinks water but absorb it through the skin." This statement is correct, accurately describing the skin's role. S4: "Male frogs can be distinguished by the presence of sound producing vocal sacs and also a copulatory pad on the first digit of the fore limbs which are absent in female frogs." This statement is correct, detailing the sexual dimorphism. S5: "They do not have constant body temperature i.e., their body temperature varies with the temperature of the environment. Such animals are called cold blooded or poikilotherms." This statement is incorrect. Frogs are poikilotherms (cold-blooded), not homeotherms (warm-blooded). Therefore, statements S1, S3, and S4 are correct. Final Answer is A as it correctly identifies S1, S3 and S4 as correct.
