The cortex is the OUTER layer and the medulla is the CENTRAL (inner) part. NCERT says: 'The centrally located tissue is called the adrenal medulla, and outside this lies the adrenal cortex.' Easy trick: 'cortex' sounds like a coat, and a coat goes on the outside. Many students flip this and lose marks in matching questions, so lock it: Cortex = Coat = Outside; Medulla = Middle.
The adrenal MEDULLA (inner part) makes adrenaline (epinephrine) and noradrenaline (norepinephrine), together called catecholamines. The adrenal CORTEX (outer part) makes cortisol and aldosterone, together called corticoids. So all the 'fight or flight' fast hormones are from the medulla, and the slow steroid hormones are from the cortex.
Adrenal cortex hormones (corticoids like cortisol and aldosterone) are STEROID hormones — they are made from cholesterol. Adrenal medulla hormones (adrenaline, noradrenaline) are amino-acid derived (from the amino acid tyrosine), not steroids. This is a common NEET trap: 'Which is NOT a steroid?' — glucagon and adrenaline are not steroids, but cortisol IS.
Both are made by the adrenal cortex. Glucocorticoids (mainly cortisol) control glucose — they stimulate gluconeogenesis, lipolysis, proteolysis, and give anti-inflammatory action while suppressing the immune response. Mineralocorticoids (mainly aldosterone) control minerals — aldosterone acts on renal tubules to reabsorb Na+ and water and excrete K+, so it maintains electrolytes and blood pressure.
