You have one pair of adrenal glands, one sitting on top of each kidney. Each gland has two parts: the outer adrenal cortex (which makes steroid hormones called corticoids, mainly cortisol and aldosterone) and the inner adrenal medulla (which makes catecholamines, adrenaline and noradrenaline). The adrenal gland has an outer cortex (steroid corticoids: cortisol and aldosterone) wrapped around an inner medulla (catecholamines: adrenaline and noradrenaline). Remember: Cortex = Coat = Outside; Medulla = Middle.

Is the cortex inside or outside in the adrenal gland?

The cortex is the OUTER layer and the medulla is the CENTRAL (inner) part. NCERT says: 'The centrally located tissue is called the adrenal medulla, and outside this lies the adrenal cortex.' Easy trick: 'cortex' sounds like a coat, and a coat goes on the outside. Many students flip this and lose marks in matching questions, so lock it: Cortex = Coat = Outside; Medulla = Middle.

Which part makes adrenaline, and which part makes cortisol?

The adrenal MEDULLA (inner part) makes adrenaline (epinephrine) and noradrenaline (norepinephrine), together called catecholamines. The adrenal CORTEX (outer part) makes cortisol and aldosterone, together called corticoids. So all the 'fight or flight' fast hormones are from the medulla, and the slow steroid hormones are from the cortex.

Are adrenal cortex hormones steroids or proteins?

Adrenal cortex hormones (corticoids like cortisol and aldosterone) are STEROID hormones — they are made from cholesterol. Adrenal medulla hormones (adrenaline, noradrenaline) are amino-acid derived (from the amino acid tyrosine), not steroids. This is a common NEET trap: 'Which is NOT a steroid?' — glucagon and adrenaline are not steroids, but cortisol IS.

What is the difference between glucocorticoids and mineralocorticoids?

Both are made by the adrenal cortex. Glucocorticoids (mainly cortisol) control glucose — they stimulate gluconeogenesis, lipolysis, proteolysis, and give anti-inflammatory action while suppressing the immune response. Mineralocorticoids (mainly aldosterone) control minerals — aldosterone acts on renal tubules to reabsorb Na+ and water and excrete K+, so it maintains electrolytes and blood pressure.

Which adrenal part is linked to Addison's disease?

Addison's disease is caused by UNDERPRODUCTION of hormones by the adrenal CORTEX. It alters carbohydrate metabolism and causes acute weakness and fatigue. Note: it is the cortex, not the medulla. Cushing's syndrome, on the other hand, is EXCESS cortisol from the cortex (moon face, hyperglycemia).

Do adrenal hormones affect the heart?

Yes. Adrenal MEDULLARY hormones (adrenaline/noradrenaline) increase heart beat, strength of heart contraction, and cardiac output — this is the fast emergency response. NCERT also notes glucocorticoids (from the cortex) help maintain the cardio-vascular system. So both parts touch the heart, but the fast, direct effect on heart rate is from the medulla.

Adrenaline (and noradrenaline) is secreted by the adrenal MEDULLA. The cortex makes steroid corticoids (cortisol, aldosterone).
🧠 NTA loves flipping the layer. Say it out loud: Medulla = adrenaline (both have the 'ad'... no, better: Medulla = Middle = adrenaline). Cortex = corticoids. If a question maps 'Catecholamines' to 'Adrenal Cortex', it is a trap.
