What is the difference between a producer, a consumer and a decomposer?

A producer makes its own food from sunlight, water and carbon dioxide (all green plants, algae, phytoplankton). A consumer cannot make food, so it eats other living things (animals). A decomposer feeds on dead bodies and waste and turns them into simple nutrients (fungi and bacteria). So producers add energy to the ecosystem, consumers use it, and decomposers return the nutrients to the soil.

Are decomposers the same as consumers?

No. Both cannot make their own food, so both are heterotrophs. But a consumer eats living organisms, while a decomposer feeds only on dead organic matter (detritus) and waste. NEET keeps them as separate groups. Do not call a fungus or bacterium a consumer in the answer.

Is a herbivore a producer or a consumer?
