What is the difference between an antibody and an antigen?

An antigen is the foreign molecule (for example a protein on the surface of a pathogen) that enters your body. An antibody is the protein your B-lymphocytes make to bind and neutralise that antigen. Simple way to remember: antiGEN = the enemy that GENerates the response; antiBODY = the defender your BODY builds. They fit together like a lock and key at the antigen-binding site.

What does H2L2 mean in an antibody?

Which cell produces antibodies, B-cells or T-cells?

B-lymphocytes (B-cells) produce antibodies. T-lymphocytes do NOT secrete antibodies; they only help B-cells make them. Because antibodies travel in the blood (a body fluid), this defence is called the humoral immune response.

What holds the heavy and light chains of an antibody together?

Disulfide bonds hold the heavy and light chains together. These are shown in NCERT Figure 7.4. So the two heavy chains and the two light chains are linked by disulfide (S-S) bonds, forming one stable Y-shaped antibody molecule.
