A vaccine puts a weakened or inactivated pathogen, or its antigenic proteins, into your body. Your body then makes antibodies AND special memory B-cells and T-cells. A vaccine injects the antigen (weakened/inactivated pathogen), so your own body builds antibodies plus memory B and T cells. On a later real infection, the memory cells respond fast with a massive antibody surge. This is active immunity, based on the memory of the immune system.

Does a vaccine contain antibodies or antigens?

A vaccine contains ANTIGENS, not antibodies. NCERT says a vaccine is a preparation of antigenic proteins of the pathogen, or an inactivated/weakened (attenuated) pathogen. These antigens make YOUR body produce its own antibodies. Ready-made (preformed) antibodies are given only in passive immunisation, like antivenom for snakebite or antitoxin for tetanus.

What is the principle of vaccination or immunisation?

The principle is the property of 'memory' of the immune system. The vaccine antigen makes your body produce antibodies and, more importantly, memory B-cells and T-cells. On the next exposure to the real pathogen, these memory cells recognise it quickly and cause a massive, fast production of antibodies (secondary response) that overwhelms the invader.

Is vaccination active immunity or passive immunity?

Vaccination gives ACTIVE immunity. Your own body is exposed to the antigen and makes its own antibodies and memory cells. It is slow to build but long-lasting. Passive immunity is the opposite: ready-made antibodies are directly injected (antivenom, antitoxin, mother's milk), giving fast but short-lived protection with NO memory.

Do polio drops contain live active pathogens?

No. Oral polio drops contain ATTENUATED (weakened) pathogens, not fully active/virulent ones. The weakened virus is enough to trigger antibodies and memory cells but cannot cause the disease. This exact point was asked in NEET 2016.

How are recombinant DNA vaccines like hepatitis B made?

Recombinant DNA technology puts the gene for an antigenic polypeptide of the pathogen into bacteria or yeast. The microbe then makes that antigen in large amounts. The hepatitis B vaccine is produced this way from yeast. This allows large-scale production and greater availability for immunisation.

Why does a vaccine take time to protect you?

Because active immunity is slow. Your body needs time to recognise the antigen, produce antibodies, and build memory cells on this first exposure (primary response). That is why vaccines are given BEFORE infection, not during a fast emergency like a snakebite, where preformed antibodies (passive) are injected instead.

Polio drops and antivenom are the same thing because both protect against disease, so both contain ready-made antibodies.
Antivenom contains PREFORMED (ready-made) antibodies = passive immunity. Polio drops contain ATTENUATED (weakened) pathogens = the antigen, so YOUR body makes the antibodies = active immunity. They are opposites in mechanism.
