Artificial systems used only a few surface features (like habit, colour, number of stamens). Natural systems used many features together, both external and internal (anatomy, embryology, phytochemistry). Phylogenetic systems group organisms by evolutionary relationship, assuming members of the same group share a common ancestor. So the order over time is: few traits (artificial) to many traits (natural) to evolution-based (phylogenetic).
Carolus Linnaeus gave an ARTIFICIAL system. He classified flowering plants mainly using the androecium, that is the structure and number of stamens. Because it used only a few characters, it is artificial. Note: Linnaeus is also famous for binomial nomenclature (two-word naming), but his plant classification itself was artificial.
George Bentham and Joseph Dalton Hooker gave the natural classification system for flowering plants. It uses natural affinities and considers many features together, not just outside features but also anatomy, embryology and phytochemistry (plant chemistry). This is why NCERT lists it as the natural system, not the phylogenetic one.
It is NATURAL, not phylogenetic. This is a very common trap. Bentham and Hooker used many characters to show natural relationships, but they did not base it on evolution. Phylogenetic (evolution-based) classification came later and is the system accepted today.
Two reasons. First, it used only a few characters, so it separated closely related species that actually belong together. Second, it gave equal weightage (equal importance) to vegetative characters and sexual (reproductive) characters. This is wrong because vegetative characters are easily changed by the environment, so they are not reliable for grouping.
Phylogenetic means based on evolutionary history. It groups organisms by how closely related they are in evolution, assuming plants in the same group came from a common ancestor. When fossil evidence is missing, scientists also use extra tools like numerical taxonomy, cytotaxonomy and chemotaxonomy to decide the groups.
Yes, and that is exactly its weakness. Artificial systems treated vegetative characters (leaves, stem) and sexual characters (flower parts) as equally important. NCERT says this is not acceptable because vegetative characters change easily with the environment, so they should not carry the same importance.
