There are three ways scientists have grouped plants over time. Artificial systems (like Linnaeus) used only a few outside features such as leaf shape or the number of stamens. Natural systems (Bentham and Hooker) used many features, both outside and inside, like anatomy and embryology. Phylogenetic systems, used today, group plants by their evolutionary history, meaning who shares a common ancestor. What is the difference between artificial, natural and phylogenetic classification?

Artificial systems used only a few surface features (like habit, colour, number of stamens). Natural systems used many features together, both external and internal (anatomy, embryology, phytochemistry). Phylogenetic systems group organisms by evolutionary relationship, assuming members of the same group share a common ancestor. So the order over time is: few traits (artificial) to many traits (natural) to evolution-based (phylogenetic).

Which classification system did Linnaeus give?

Carolus Linnaeus gave an ARTIFICIAL system. He classified flowering plants mainly using the androecium, that is the structure and number of stamens. Because it used only a few characters, it is artificial. Note: Linnaeus is also famous for binomial nomenclature (two-word naming), but his plant classification itself was artificial.

Who gave the natural system of classification?

George Bentham and Joseph Dalton Hooker gave the natural classification system for flowering plants. It uses natural affinities and considers many features together, not just outside features but also anatomy, embryology and phytochemistry (plant chemistry). This is why NCERT lists it as the natural system, not the phylogenetic one.

Is Bentham and Hooker's system natural or phylogenetic?

It is NATURAL, not phylogenetic. This is a very common trap. Bentham and Hooker used many characters to show natural relationships, but they did not base it on evolution. Phylogenetic (evolution-based) classification came later and is the system accepted today.

Why is the artificial system of classification not accepted now?

Two reasons. First, it used only a few characters, so it separated closely related species that actually belong together. Second, it gave equal weightage (equal importance) to vegetative characters and sexual (reproductive) characters. This is wrong because vegetative characters are easily changed by the environment, so they are not reliable for grouping.

What does phylogenetic classification mean in simple words?

Phylogenetic means based on evolutionary history. It groups organisms by how closely related they are in evolution, assuming plants in the same group came from a common ancestor. When fossil evidence is missing, scientists also use extra tools like numerical taxonomy, cytotaxonomy and chemotaxonomy to decide the groups.

Does artificial classification give equal weightage to vegetative and sexual characters?

Yes, and that is exactly its weakness. Artificial systems treated vegetative characters (leaves, stem) and sexual characters (flower parts) as equally important. NCERT says this is not acceptable because vegetative characters change easily with the environment, so they should not carry the same importance.
