Are liverworts and mosses the same thing?

No. Both are bryophytes and both need water to reproduce, so they get confused. But their plant body is different. So they belong to the same group but look different.

Is a liverwort thalloid or leafy?

A liverwort is thalloid and dorsiventral. NCERT says clearly: 'The plant body of a liverwort is thalloid, e.g. Marchantia.' Thalloid means the body is a flat sheet, not divided into stem and leaves. Dorsiventral means it has a distinct upper side and lower side. Only mosses have the leafy, upright body.

What is the difference between the liverwort body and the moss body?

Do liverworts or mosses have gemma cups?

Liverworts have gemma cups, not mosses. Gemma cups are small cup-shaped structures on the liverwort thallus (like in Marchantia) that hold green asexual buds called gemmae. NEET has repeatedly asked this. Mosses do not form gemma cups; mosses have a protonema stage instead. So 'gemma cups = liverwort (Marchantia)' is a fixed fact.

Does the moss have a protonema stage but the liverwort does not?

Yes. In a moss the gametophyte has two stages: first the protonema (a creeping, green, branched, thread-like stage that grows directly from a spore), then the leafy stage that comes as a lateral bud from the protonema. This distinct protonema stage is a moss feature. The liverwort thallus does not pass through this typical filamentous protonema.

How are the rhizoids different in liverworts and mosses?

Rhizoids are the root-like threads that fix the plant to the soil. In liverworts the rhizoids are usually unicellular (single-celled). In mosses the rhizoids are multicellular and branched. So if a question says 'multicellular branched rhizoids,' it points to a moss, not a liverwort.
