What Are Gymnosperms and Why Their Seeds Are Called Naked

Biology · Plant Kingdom · NEET

Gymnosperms are seed plants in which the ovules (and the seeds that form from them) are NOT covered by any ovary wall. They sit open on the surface of a leaf-like structure, so we say the seeds are "naked". The name itself tells you this: gymnos means naked and sperma means seed. Memory hook: "Gym-no clothes" - a gymnosperm seed has no coat of fruit around it, it is bare.

In a gymnosperm the ovules/seeds sit exposed on a megasporophyll with no ovary around them (naked). In an angiosperm the seeds are enclosed inside the ovary, which becomes a fruit.

Your doubts, answered

Why exactly are the seeds called "naked" if I can see a hard cover on a pine seed?

"Naked" does NOT mean the seed has no seed coat. It means there is no OVARY WALL (no fruit) around the ovule and seed. In flowering plants the ovule sits inside an ovary, and after fertilisation the ovary wall grows into a fruit that wraps the seed. In gymnosperms there is no ovary at all, so the ovule stays exposed on the surface of a megasporophyll, both before and after fertilisation. NCERT says it plainly: gymnos = naked, sperma = seeds. So the seed is naked in the sense that no fruit covers it.

Do gymnosperms have seeds or not? I get confused with ferns.

Yes, gymnosperms DO have true seeds - that is the whole point of the name ("sperma" = seed). This is what separates them from pteridophytes like ferns, which reproduce only by spores and have NO seeds. Gymnosperms are seed plants; they just keep the seed uncovered. So the ladder is: ferns = spores, no seed; gymnosperms = naked seed; angiosperms = seed inside a fruit.

Do gymnosperms have flowers and fruits?

No. Gymnosperms have NO flowers and NO fruits. Because there is no ovary, there can be no fruit. Instead of flowers they bear cones (also called strobili). Only angiosperms (flowering plants) have real flowers and fruits. This is a very common NEET trap - an option like "gymnosperms have flowers" or "seeds enclosed in fruits" is always wrong.

What is the difference between a gymnosperm seed and an angiosperm seed?

The seed itself is similar, but the covering is the key difference. In a gymnosperm the ovule is exposed on a megasporophyll and the seed stays naked (no ovary, no fruit). In an angiosperm the ovule is enclosed inside the ovary; after fertilisation the ovary becomes a fruit that encloses the seed. So: gymnosperm = seed NOT enclosed by ovary wall; angiosperm = seed enclosed by ovary wall (fruit).

What are the standard NEET examples of gymnosperms?

Remember these from NCERT: Cycas, Pinus, Ginkgo, Cedrus, and the giant redwood Sequoia (one of the tallest trees). Gymnosperms range in size from tiny to very tall trees. Watch out: Salvinia, Selaginella and Equisetum (horsetails) are PTERIDOPHYTES, not gymnosperms - NEET loves to slip these into gymnosperm lists.

Are gymnosperms homosporous or heterosporous?

Gymnosperms are HETEROSPOROUS only - they make two kinds of spores: microspores (which become pollen/male gametophyte) and megaspores (which become the female gametophyte). A statement saying gymnosperms are "both homosporous and heterosporous" is WRONG (this was tested in NEET 2016). Heterospory is linked to the seed habit, so all seed plants are heterosporous.

⚠️ The NEET trap
Gymnosperms are called naked because their seeds have no seed coat / because they have no seeds at all.
Gymnosperms are naked because the ovules are NOT enclosed by an ovary wall and stay exposed before and after fertilisation, so the seed is uncovered by any fruit. They do have true seeds and a seed coat.
🧠 "Naked" = no OVARY/FRUIT around it, NOT "no seed" and NOT "no seed coat". No ovary means no fruit means the seed shows.

Real NEET questions

2025

Which one of the following is the characteristic feature of gymnosperms?

A · Seeds are absent
B · Gymnosperms have flowers for reproduction
C · Seeds are enclosed in fruits
D · Seeds are naked
Solution: The defining feature of gymnosperms (gymnos = naked, sperma = seeds) is that the ovules are not enclosed by an ovary wall, so the seeds that form after fertilisation are not covered, i.e. naked. "Seeds are absent" is wrong because gymnosperms DO have true seeds. "Enclosed in fruits" describes angiosperms. Gymnosperms bear cones/strobili, not flowers, so option (B) is wrong. NCERT Class XI, Plant Kingdom: "The seeds that develop post-fertilisation, are not covered, i.e., are naked."
2026

In which one of the following, the ovules are not enclosed by an ovary wall and remain exposed?

A · Funaria
B · Pinus
C · Selaginella
D · Wolffia
Solution: Naked, exposed ovules not enclosed by an ovary wall are the hallmark of gymnosperms, and Pinus is the gymnosperm here. Funaria is a moss (bryophyte) and Selaginella is a pteridophyte - neither bears ovules - while Wolffia is an angiosperm whose ovules are enclosed within the ovary. NCERT: "the ovules are not enclosed by any ovary wall and remain exposed, both before and after fertilisation."
2017

Which of the following statements is correct?

A · Horsetails are gymnosperms
B · Selaginella is heterosporous, while Salvinia is homosporous
C · Ovules are not enclosed by ovary wall in gymnosperms
D · Stems are usually unbranched in both Cycas and Cedrus
Solution: By definition gymnosperms (gymnos = naked, sperma = seeds) have ovules that are not enclosed by any ovary wall and remain exposed, so option (C) is correct. Horsetails (Equisetum) are pteridophytes, not gymnosperms. Both Selaginella and Salvinia are heterosporous. Cycas is unbranched but Cedrus is branched, so (D) is wrong. This exact statement was reused across NEET 2017-2023.

Frequently asked

What does the word gymnosperm mean?

It comes from Greek: gymnos means "naked" and sperma means "seed". So gymnosperm literally means "naked seed" - a plant whose seeds are not covered by a fruit.

Are gymnosperms flowering or non-flowering plants?

Non-flowering. Gymnosperms have no true flowers and no fruits. They reproduce using cones (strobili). Only angiosperms are flowering plants.

Give five examples of gymnosperms for NEET.

Cycas, Pinus, Ginkgo, Cedrus and Sequoia (the giant redwood, one of the tallest trees). All bear naked seeds on cones.

Why is Salvinia not a gymnosperm?

Salvinia is a pteridophyte (a fern ally). It reproduces by spores and has no seeds, so it cannot be a gymnosperm. NEET often lists it as a wrong gymnosperm option.

Do gymnosperms form a pollen tube?

Yes. Pollen grains are carried by air currents to the ovule, and a pollen tube IS formed that delivers the male gametes toward the archegonia. A statement saying "pollen tube is not formed" is false (tested in NEET 2023).
