Compound (Stratified) Epithelium: Structure and Role

Biology · Structural Organisation in Animals · NEET

Compound epithelium is made of two or more layers of cells. Because it is many cells thick, its main job is PROTECTION, not absorption or secretion. Memory hook: "compound = many layers = shield." It lines places that face wear and stress, like the dry skin surface and the moist inner lining of the mouth (buccal cavity).

Compound epithelium is stacked in many layers so it shields surfaces from stress; only the deepest layer touches the basement membrane, and it does little absorption or secretion.

Your doubts, answered

Is compound epithelium the same as stratified epithelium?

Yes. NCERT uses the name 'compound epithelium'. In many other books the same tissue is called 'stratified epithelium'. Both mean an epithelium made of two or more layers of cells. For NEET, treat the two words as the same thing.

Why does compound epithelium have almost no role in secretion or absorption?

Simple epithelium is only ONE cell thick, so molecules can pass through it easily for absorption and secretion. Compound epithelium is MANY cells thick, so substances cannot pass through easily. Being thick makes it a strong barrier, so its role is mainly protection, not secretion or absorption.

How is compound epithelium different from simple epithelium?

Simple epithelium = one single layer of cells; main jobs are secretion and absorption. Compound epithelium = two or more layers of cells; main job is protection. Remember: 'simple = single layer = absorb/secrete; compound = many layers = protect.'

Where is compound epithelium found in the body?

NCERT gives two clear examples: the dry surface of the skin and the moist surface of the buccal cavity (inside of the mouth). It covers surfaces that face friction, drying, or mechanical stress.

Do all the cells of compound epithelium touch the basement membrane?

No. This is a key point. In compound epithelium, only the DEEPEST (bottom) layer of cells sits on the basement membrane. The upper layers do not touch it. In simple epithelium, every cell touches the basement membrane because there is only one layer.

⚠️ The NEET trap
Compound epithelium is one cell thick and mainly helps in absorption and secretion.
Compound epithelium is made of two or more cell layers and its main role is protection, not absorption or secretion.
🧠 If the question says 'many layers' or 'protection,' pick compound. If it says 'single layer' or 'absorption/secretion,' pick simple. NTA loves swapping these two roles.

Match List I with List II. List I: A. Unicellular glandular epithelium, B. Compound epithelium, C. Multicellular glandular epithelium, D. Endocrine glandular epithelium. List II: I. Salivary Glands, II. Pancreas, III. Goblet cells of alimentary canal, IV. Moist surface of buccal cavity.

A · A-IV, B-III, C-I, D-II
B · A-III, B-IV, C-I, D-II
C · A-II, B-I, C-IV, D-III
D · A-II, B-I, C-III, D-IV
Solution: Compound epithelium is the multilayered, protective tissue that covers surfaces facing stress, including the moist surface of the buccal cavity, so B matches IV. Unicellular glandular epithelium = goblet cells (A-III); multicellular glandular epithelium = salivary glands (C-I); endocrine glandular epithelium = pancreas (D-II). This gives A-III, B-IV, C-I, D-II, which is option (b).

Frequently asked

What is compound epithelium in one line?

An epithelium made of two or more layers of cells, whose main job is to protect surfaces that face wear and stress.

What is the main function of compound epithelium?

Protection. Its many layers form a strong barrier, so it has little role in absorption or secretion.

Give two NCERT examples of compound epithelium.

The dry surface of the skin and the moist surface of the buccal cavity (inside of the mouth).

Why is only one layer of compound epithelium attached to the basement membrane?

Because the cells are stacked in layers, only the deepest layer sits on the basement membrane; the layers above rest on the cells below them.

Is stratified epithelium the same as compound epithelium?

Yes, they are two names for the same multilayered tissue. NCERT calls it compound epithelium.
