Every epithelium has two sides. One side (the free or apical surface) faces the outside of the body or the lumen (hollow space) of a cavity, duct or tube. The other side rests on the basement membrane. This is a defining feature: if a tissue has no free surface, it is not epithelium. For NEET, remember the free surface can carry cilia (to move mucus) or microvilli (to increase surface area for absorption).

The basement membrane is a thin, non-cellular (acellular) layer that lies on the base of the epithelium, opposite to the free surface. It attaches the epithelial cells to the underlying connective tissue. Because it is non-living and secreted material, it is not counted as a layer of cells - so 'simple' epithelium is still one cell layer even though the basement membrane is present below it.

Cilia on some epithelia also help movement of mucus.
Epithelium has cells tightly packed with very little matrix and always has a free surface, while connective tissue has few cells scattered in an abundant intercellular matrix and has no free surface. This tight-packing versus abundant-matrix contrast is the fastest way to separate the two in a NEET question.
