Epithelial tissue (epithelium) is a sheet-like tissue that covers the body surface and lines its cavities, ducts and tubes. Its cells are tightly packed with almost no space between them, they sit on a non-cellular basement membrane, and they always have one free surface that faces outside or a body fluid. Epithelial tissue always rests on a basement membrane and has one free surface. Simple epithelium is a single cell layer (absorption, secretion); compound epithelium is many layers (protection). Cells are tightly packed with almost no matrix and no blood vessels of their own.

What exactly is the 'free surface' of epithelium and why does it matter?

Every epithelium has two sides. One side (the free or apical surface) faces the outside of the body or the lumen (hollow space) of a cavity, duct or tube. The other side rests on the basement membrane. This is a defining feature: if a tissue has no free surface, it is not epithelium. For NEET, remember the free surface can carry cilia (to move mucus) or microvilli (to increase surface area for absorption).

Does epithelial tissue have its own blood vessels?

No. Epithelium is avascular - it has no blood vessels of its own. It gets oxygen and nutrients by diffusion from blood vessels in the connective tissue lying just below the basement membrane. This is a common NEET point: epithelium is nourished from below, not by capillaries inside it.

What is the basement membrane made of and which side is it on?

The basement membrane is a thin, non-cellular (acellular) layer that lies on the base of the epithelium, opposite to the free surface. It attaches the epithelial cells to the underlying connective tissue. Because it is non-living and secreted material, it is not counted as a layer of cells - so 'simple' epithelium is still one cell layer even though the basement membrane is present below it.

Is epithelium a covering tissue or a lining tissue - which is correct?

Both. Epithelium covers the outer body surface (like the outer skin layer) AND lines the inside of hollow organs, cavities, ducts and tubes (mouth, stomach, blood vessels, kidney tubules). NCERT calls it a sheet-like tissue that lines the body's surface and its cavities, ducts and tubes. So calling it only 'covering' or only 'lining' is incomplete.

What are the main functions of epithelial tissue?

Four main jobs: (1) Protection - covers and protects underlying tissues from injury and drying; (2) Absorption - lining of intestine and kidney tubules absorbs nutrients and water; (3) Secretion - glandular epithelium makes and releases mucus, enzymes, sweat and hormones; (4) Filtration and transport - thin squamous epithelium in blood vessels and air sacs allows diffusion. Cilia on some epithelia also help movement of mucus.

How is epithelium different from connective tissue in one line?

Epithelium has cells tightly packed with very little matrix and always has a free surface, while connective tissue has few cells scattered in an abundant intercellular matrix and has no free surface. This tight-packing versus abundant-matrix contrast is the fastest way to separate the two in a NEET question.
