How do I actually get the mole ratio from an equation?

First make sure the equation is balanced. Then read the coefficients (the numbers in front of each formula). For N2 + 3H2 -> 2NH3, the coefficients are 1, 3, 2. So the mole ratio of N2 : H2 : NH3 is 1 : 3 : 2. These numbers ARE the ratio of moles. If there is no number written, it means 1.

How do I convert moles of one substance into moles of another?

Use the mole ratio as a fraction. Multiply the moles you know by (coefficient of what you want / coefficient of what you have). Example: to find moles of H2 needed for 20 mol NH3 in N2 + 3H2 -> 2NH3, multiply 20 mol NH3 by (3 H2 / 2 NH3) = 30 mol H2. Always put the thing you WANT on top.

Do I need the mass or molar mass for a pure mole-to-mole question?

No. If the question already gives you moles and asks for moles, you only need the balanced equation and the mole ratio. Molar mass is only needed when the question gives grams or asks for grams. Do not waste time converting when it is not required.

Why can't I just use the ratio without balancing first?

Because unbalanced coefficients give a wrong ratio. An unbalanced equation breaks the law of conservation of mass, so the numbers do not match real amounts. Always balance the equation before you read any ratio. This is the single most common mistake NEET students make.

Does the mole ratio work for atoms and molecules too?

Yes. The coefficients give the same ratio whether you count in moles, molecules, or (for gases at the same conditions) volumes. So 1 : 3 : 2 for N2 : H2 : NH3 also means 1 molecule N2 reacts with 3 molecules H2 to give 2 molecules NH3. It does NOT directly give the mass ratio.

For 20 mol NH3 in N2 + 3H2 -> 2NH3, students pick 20 mol H2, thinking H2 and NH3 are 1:1.
The ratio is 3 H2 : 2 NH3. So H2 = 20 x (3/2) = 30 mol. Answer is 30.
