EM Spectrum Order by Wavelength and Frequency

Physics · Electromagnetic Waves · NEET

By increasing frequency (and decreasing wavelength), the EM spectrum order is: Radio waves, Microwaves, Infrared, Visible light, Ultraviolet, X-rays, Gamma rays. Wavelength and frequency are inversely related (c = f × λ), so as you move toward gamma rays the wavelength gets smaller and the frequency gets larger. Memory hook: "Raman's Mother Is Visiting Uncle X's Garden" = Radio, Microwave, Infrared, Visible, Ultraviolet, X-ray, Gamma.
Electromagnetic Spectrum OrderRadioMicroIRVisibleUVX-rayGammaFrequency increases → (energy increases)Wavelength increases →~10^2 m~10^-12 m
Left to right frequency and energy increase (Radio to Gamma); wavelength does the opposite and increases from right to left. All these waves still travel at c = 3 x 10^8 m/s in vacuum.

Your doubts, answered

Is the order by wavelength the same as the order by frequency?

No, they are exactly reversed. Since c = f × λ and c (speed of light) is fixed in vacuum, frequency and wavelength are inversely related. In order of increasing frequency it is Radio to Gamma; in order of increasing wavelength it is the reverse, Gamma to Radio. Both describe the same spectrum, just read from opposite ends.

Which EM wave has the highest frequency and which has the longest wavelength?

Gamma rays have the highest frequency and the shortest wavelength (about 10^-12 m or less). Radio waves have the lowest frequency and the longest wavelength (from about 0.1 m up to hundreds of metres). This is the single fact NEET tests most, so anchor both ends first.

Where does visible light sit in the spectrum?

Visible light sits in the middle, between infrared (longer wavelength side) and ultraviolet (shorter wavelength side). Its range is about 400 nm (violet) to 700 nm (red). Red has the longest wavelength of visible light and is next to infrared; violet has the shortest and is next to ultraviolet.

Do all EM waves travel at the same speed?

Yes. In vacuum every EM wave, from radio to gamma, travels at c = 3 x 10^8 m/s. Only their frequency and wavelength differ. So a question asking which EM wave travels fastest in vacuum is a trick, the answer is all equal.

Is infrared closer to red light or to microwaves?

Infrared lies between visible light and microwaves. On the visible side it borders red (that is why we say 'below red', infra-red). On the other side it borders microwaves. So infrared wavelength is longer than red light but shorter than microwaves.

⚠️ The NEET trap
Writing the frequency order and the wavelength order as the same sequence, or forgetting that different EM waves still travel at the same speed c.
Increasing frequency = Radio, Microwave, Infrared, Visible, UV, X-ray, Gamma. Increasing wavelength is the exact reverse. All travel at c = 3 x 10^8 m/s in vacuum; only f and λ change.
🧠 If the question says 'increasing wavelength', flip your memorised frequency list; do not write the same order twice.

Real NEET questions

NEET 2022

Match List I (Electromagnetic waves) with List II (Wavelength): (a) AM radio waves (b) Microwaves (c) Infrared waves (d) X-rays; (i) 10^-10 m (ii) 10^2 m (iii) 10^-2 m (iv) 10^-4 m.

A · a-iv, b-iii, c-ii, d-i
B · a-iii, b-ii, c-i, d-iv
C · a-iii, b-iv, c-ii, d-i
D · a-ii, b-iii, c-iv, d-i
Solution: Step 1: Use the spectrum order by wavelength. Radio waves have the longest wavelength, then microwaves, then infrared, then X-rays (shortest). Step 2: AM radio waves are the longest here, so match with (ii) 10^2 m. Step 3: Microwaves come next, wavelength about 10^-2 m, so (iii). Step 4: Infrared is shorter than microwaves, about 10^-4 m, so (iv). Step 5: X-rays are the shortest, 10^-10 m, so (i). Result: a-ii, b-iii, c-iv, d-i, which is option D.

Frequently asked

What is the correct order of the EM spectrum by increasing frequency?

Radio waves, Microwaves, Infrared, Visible light, Ultraviolet, X-rays, Gamma rays. Frequency increases from radio up to gamma.

What is the order by increasing wavelength?

Gamma rays, X-rays, Ultraviolet, Visible light, Infrared, Microwaves, Radio waves. It is the exact reverse of the frequency order because c = f × λ.

What is an easy way to remember the EM spectrum order?

Use 'Raman's Mother Is Visiting Uncle X's Garden' for Radio, Microwave, Infrared, Visible, Ultraviolet, X-ray, Gamma in order of increasing frequency.

Which EM wave carries the most energy?

Gamma rays, because energy E = h × f and gamma rays have the highest frequency. Radio waves carry the least energy.

Why is this order important for NEET?

Almost every year NEET gives a match-the-column or arrange-in-order question on wavelength, frequency, production, or uses. Knowing the ends (radio and gamma) and the middle (visible) lets you solve it in seconds.
