Hormonal Control of Spermatogenesis — NEET Biology

✅ Asked in NEET 2024
📖 NCERT Source

Spermatogenesis starts at the age of puberty due to significant increase in the secretion of gonadotrophin releasing hormone (GnRH). This, if you recall, is a hypothalamic hormone. The increased levels of GnRH then acts at the anterior pituitary gland and stimulates secretion of two gonadotrophins – luteinising hormone (LH) and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH). LH acts at the Leydig cells and stimulates synthesis and secretion of androgens. Androgens, in turn, stimulate the process of spermatogenesis. FSH acts on the Sertoli cells and stimulates

How NTA Uses This Concept

NTA tests students on the specific roles of LH and FSH in spermatogenesis. LH stimulates Leydig cells to produce androgens, while FSH acts on Sertoli cells to support sperm production. The common mistake is confusing which hormone acts on which cell type, or thinking both hormones have identical functions. Remember: LH → Leydig cells → androgens; FSH → Sertoli cells → spermatogenesis support. This concept appears repeatedly because it directly relates to understanding male reproductive physiology and hormone regulation at the molecular level.

Identify the correct option (A), (B), (C), (D) with respect to spermatogenesis. GnRH → LH → (B) → Androgens → Formation of spermatids GnRH → FSH → (A) → (C) → Factors → (D)

Q2 of 3NEET 2024

Given below are two statements: Assertion (A): FSH acts upon ovarian follicles in female and Leydig cells in male. Reason (R): Growing ovarian follicles secrete estrogen in female while interstitial cells secrete androgen in male human being.

Q3 of 3NEET 2023

Arrange the sequence of different hormones for their role during gametogenesis: A. Gonadotropin LH stimulates synthesis and secretion of Androgen B. Gonadotropin releasing hormone from hypothalamus C. Androgen stimulates spermatogenesis D. Gonadotropin FSH helps in the process of spermiogenesis E. Gonadotropins from anterior pituitary gland Choose the correct answer:
