Cannabinoids: Marijuana, Hashish and Cannabis sativa

Biology · Human Health and Diseases · NEET

Cannabinoids are a group of chemicals that act on cannabinoid receptors in the brain. Natural cannabinoids come from the inflorescence (flower tops) of the plant Cannabis sativa; from its flower tops, leaves and resin we get marijuana, hashish, charas and ganja. For NEET, remember the one effect NCERT stresses: cannabinoids affect the cardiovascular system (the heart and blood vessels). Memory hook: "Cannabis affects the CARdiovascular system - both start with C."

Cannabinoids come from the inflorescence, leaves and resin of Cannabis sativa, giving marijuana, hashish, charas and ganja; their main NCERT effect is on the cardiovascular system.

Your doubts, answered

Which plant gives cannabinoids, and which part is used?

Natural cannabinoids are obtained from the inflorescence of the plant Cannabis sativa. The inflorescence is the flower-bearing part (the flower tops). NCERT says the flower tops, leaves and the resin of the cannabis plant are used in different combinations. So the source plant is Cannabis sativa and the main part is the inflorescence.

What is the difference between marijuana, hashish, charas and ganja?

They are all products of the same plant, Cannabis sativa, made from its flower tops, leaves and resin in various combinations. For NEET you do not need to separate them chemically. Just remember: all four (marijuana, hashish, charas, ganja) are cannabinoids from Cannabis sativa, and all affect the cardiovascular system.

Where do cannabinoids act in the body?

Cannabinoids interact with cannabinoid receptors that are present principally in the brain. So the receptors are mainly in the brain, but the effect NCERT highlights is on the cardiovascular system (heart and blood vessels). Do not confuse the site of receptors (brain) with the effect stressed for exams (cardiovascular).

Is marijuana a depressant like heroin?

No. Heroin is a depressant that slows down body functions and comes from Papaver somniferum. Cannabinoids (marijuana etc.) come from Cannabis sativa and are known for their effect on the cardiovascular system. This is a common NEET match-column trap - keep heroin (poppy, depressant) separate from marijuana (cannabis, cardiovascular).

How are cannabinoids taken into the body?

According to NCERT, cannabinoids are generally taken by inhalation (smoking) and oral ingestion (eating or drinking). This is different from heroin, which is generally taken by snorting and injection. NEET sometimes tests the route of intake, so link cannabis to inhalation/oral.

⚠️ The NEET trap
Marijuana is a depressant that slows down body functions, like heroin.
Marijuana (a cannabinoid from Cannabis sativa) is known for its effect on the cardiovascular system, not for slowing body functions. It is heroin that is the depressant.
🧠 In NEET 2023 match-column questions, Marijuana pairs with 'Effect on cardiovascular system' while Heroin pairs with 'Slow down body function'. Never swap these two.

Real NEET questions

NEET 2023

Match List I with List II: List I: A. Heroin B. Marijuana C. Cocaine D. Morphine List II: I. Effect on cardiovascular system II. Slow down body function III. Painkiller IV. Interfere with transport of dopamine Choose the correct answer:

A · A-II, B-I, C-IV, D-III
B · A-I, B-II, C-III, D-IV
C · A-IV, B-III, C-II, D-I
D · A-III, B-IV, C-I, D-II
Solution: A-II, B-I, C-IV, D-III. Heroin is a depressant that slows down body functions. Marijuana (cannabinoid) affects the cardiovascular system. Cocaine interferes with the transport of the neurotransmitter dopamine. Morphine is a sedative and painkiller. This is the exact NCERT effect list, so learn each drug with its one effect.
NEET 2024

Match List I with List II: List I: A. Cocaine B. Heroin C. Morphine D. Marijuana List II: I. Effective sedative in surgery II. Cannabis sativa III. Erythroxylum IV. Papaver somniferum Choose the correct answer:

A · A-I, B-III, C-II, D-IV
B · A-II, B-I, C-III, D-IV
C · A-III, B-IV, C-I, D-II
D · A-IV, B-III, C-I, D-II
Solution: A-III, B-IV, C-I, D-II. Cocaine comes from Erythroxylum (coca plant). Heroin comes from Papaver somniferum (poppy). Morphine is an effective sedative used in surgery. Marijuana comes from Cannabis sativa. Marijuana correctly pairs with Cannabis sativa here, which is the source-plant fact of this concept.

Frequently asked

What is the source of natural cannabinoids?

Natural cannabinoids are obtained from the inflorescence (flower tops) of the plant Cannabis sativa.

What products come from Cannabis sativa?

Marijuana, hashish, charas and ganja - all made from the flower tops, leaves and resin of the cannabis plant in various combinations.

What is the main effect of cannabinoids for NEET?

NCERT states cannabinoids are known for their effects on the cardiovascular system (heart and blood vessels).

Where are cannabinoid receptors located?

Cannabinoid receptors are present principally in the brain, and cannabinoids interact with these receptors.

How are cannabinoids usually taken?

They are generally taken by inhalation (smoking) and oral ingestion.

Are cannabinoids the same as opioids?

No. Opioids like morphine and heroin come from the poppy Papaver somniferum. Cannabinoids come from Cannabis sativa - a different plant with a different effect (cardiovascular).
