Why do conifers have needle-like leaves instead of broad leaves?

A broad leaf has a large surface area. More surface means more water escapes as water vapour (transpiration) and more heat and wind hit the leaf. Conifers grow in cold, dry, windy places, so they cannot afford to lose water. Needle-like leaves have a very small surface area, so much less water is lost. This is why NCERT says the needle-like leaves 'reduce the surface area'.

What are sunken stomata and how do they help?

Stomata are tiny pores on the leaf that let gases in and out, but water vapour also escapes through them. In conifers these pores are not on the flat surface — they sit inside small pits, below the leaf surface. These are called sunken stomata. The pit traps a pocket of moist, still air just above the pore. This moist trapped air slows down evaporation, so the plant loses less water. Sunken stomata are the OPPOSITE of superficial (surface) stomata.

What is the role of the thick cuticle?

The cuticle is a waxy, waterproof layer on the outside of the leaf. Water can slowly escape straight through a thin cuticle. A thick cuticle acts like an extra raincoat, so almost no water leaks out through the leaf surface. In the NEET 2016 question, the single feature that made conifers 'adapted to tolerate extreme conditions' was the thick cuticle.

Do all three features do the same job?

Yes — all three reduce water loss, but in different ways. Needle shape reduces the total surface that can lose water. Thick cuticle blocks water leaking through the surface. Sunken stomata slow down water escaping through the pores. Together they let conifers survive extremes of temperature, humidity and wind. Remember: their goal is to conserve water, not to gain more.

Are these xerophytic adaptations even though it is cold, not a desert?

Yes. Cold, windy places cause 'physiological drought' — liquid water is frozen or hard to pull up, and wind dries the plant fast. So a conifer faces the same water-shortage problem as a desert plant. That is why conifers show xerophytic (drought-resisting) features like needles, thick cuticle and sunken stomata.
