Entropy Order: Why Solid < Liquid < Gas

Chemistry · Thermodynamics · NEET

Entropy (S) measures disorder. Particles are most ordered in a solid, more free in a liquid, and most random in a gas. So the order is S(solid) < S(liquid) < S(gas). Memory hook: "Ice is neat, gas is a mess" — more freedom to move means more entropy.

Particles are ordered in a solid, freer in a liquid, and fully random in a gas. More freedom of motion means more disorder, so entropy increases in the order solid < liquid < gas.

Your doubts, answered

Which state of matter has the highest entropy?

Gas has the highest entropy. In a gas, particles move fast and freely in every direction, filling all the space. This gives the largest disorder (randomness). So gas > liquid > solid in entropy. This is asked directly in NEET, so remember it.

Why does entropy increase from solid to liquid to gas?

Entropy is a measure of disorder. In a solid, particles sit in fixed positions and only vibrate, so disorder is low. In a liquid, particles can slide past each other, so disorder is higher. In a gas, particles move freely and randomly, so disorder is highest. More freedom of movement = more entropy.

Does melting a solid increase entropy?

Yes. Melting (solid to liquid, called fusion) increases entropy because particles become freer to move. So delta S is positive for melting. The same is true for boiling (liquid to gas) and sublimation (solid to gas). All these changes make particles more disordered.

Is the entropy of a gas always more than a liquid?

For the same substance at the same temperature, yes: the gas has more entropy than the liquid, which has more than the solid. This is because the gas state has the most random particle motion. NEET usually asks this comparison for the same substance.

When does entropy decrease (delta S negative)?

Entropy decreases when disorder goes down. Examples: gas turning to liquid (condensation), liquid to solid (freezing), or fewer gas molecules forming from more gas molecules. For example, 2H(g) -> H2(g) reduces the number of gas particles, so delta S is negative. Cooling a crystal toward 0 K also lowers entropy.

How do I decide the sign of delta S for a reaction fast?

Count gas moles. If gas moles increase (delta n_g > 0), entropy usually increases (delta S positive). If gas moles decrease, entropy usually decreases. Making gas from solid or liquid raises entropy a lot, because gas is the most disordered state. This trick answers most NEET entropy questions.

⚠️ The NEET trap
Thinking 2H(g) -> H2(g) increases entropy because a bond forms and things look 'organized into a molecule,' or picking gas expansion/evaporation as the entropy-decrease case.
Entropy decreases when the number of gas particles falls. In 2H(g) -> H2(g), two gas atoms become one gas molecule, so delta n_g = -1 and delta S is negative. Evaporation, gas expansion, and sublimation all INCREASE entropy.
🧠 Count gas moles, not bonds: fewer gas particles = less mess = negative delta S. This is exactly how NEET 2019 tested it.

Real NEET questions

NEET 2019

In which case is the change in entropy negative?

A · Evaporation of water
B · Expansion of a gas at constant temperature
C · Sublimation of solid to gas
D · 2H(g) -> H2(g)
Solution: Entropy decreases (delta S < 0) only when disorder or the number of gaseous particles goes down. In 2H(g) -> H2(g), two moles of gas atoms combine into one mole of gas, so delta n_g = -1 and delta S is negative. Evaporation (liquid to gas), gas expansion, and sublimation (solid to gas) all raise disorder, so delta S is positive. Answer: D.
NEET 2024

In which of the following processes does entropy increase? A) A liquid evaporates to vapour. B) Temperature of a crystalline solid is lowered from 130 K to 0 K. C) 2NaHCO3(s) -> Na2CO3(s) + CO2(g) + H2O(g). D) Cl2(g) -> 2Cl(g).

A · A, B and D
B · A, C and D
C · C and D
D · A and C
Solution: Entropy rises when disorder or gas moles increase. A) liquid to vapour: more disorder, delta S > 0. B) cooling a crystal toward 0 K orders the lattice, delta S < 0 (so B is NOT increase). C) a solid gives 2 mol of gas, delta S > 0. D) Cl2(g) -> 2Cl(g) makes more gas particles, delta S > 0. So entropy increases for A, C and D. Answer: B.

Frequently asked

What is the correct entropy order of solid, liquid and gas?

S(solid) < S(liquid) < S(gas). Gas has the most disorder, so it has the highest entropy. Solid has the least disorder, so it has the lowest entropy.

Why is entropy of gas the highest?

In a gas, particles move fast and freely in all directions and spread out to fill the container. This maximum randomness gives the highest entropy among the three states.

What is entropy in simple words?

Entropy (S) is a measure of disorder or randomness in a system. More freedom for particles to move means higher entropy. Its unit is J/K.

Is delta S positive or negative for freezing?

Negative. Freezing turns a liquid into a solid, which is more ordered, so disorder decreases and delta S is negative. This matters for NEET spontaneity questions.

Why does this concept matter for NEET?

NEET repeatedly asks you to find the sign of delta S for a process or reaction. Knowing solid < liquid < gas, plus counting gas moles, lets you answer these quickly (asked in 2019 and 2024).
