What Is a Solar Cell? Working and I-V Characteristic

Physics · Semiconductor Electronics : Materials, Devices And Simple Circuits · NEET

A solar cell is a p-n junction diode that turns light directly into electric energy. Light falling near the junction makes electron-hole pairs, and the junction's own field pushes them apart, so the cell makes its own voltage with no battery. Memory hook: "Solar cell = a diode that GIVES power, so its I-V graph sits in the 4th quadrant" (positive voltage, negative current).
Solar Cell: light in, current out (I-V in 4th quadrant)p regionn regionjunctionlightloadVI+VIscVoc4th quadrant
Left: light near the p-n junction frees electron-hole pairs; the built-in field drives current through the load with no external battery. Right: the solar cell I-V curve sits in the fourth quadrant (positive voltage V, negative current I), meeting the axes at short-circuit current Isc and open-circuit voltage Voc.

Your doubts, answered

Is a solar cell forward biased or reverse biased?

Neither. Unlike a photodiode (which works under reverse bias), a solar cell uses NO external battery at all. Light itself generates the charge carriers, and the junction's built-in field separates them to create a voltage. So a solar cell is self-powered; it is a source of EMF, not a device that needs an outside supply.

Why does the solar cell I-V characteristic lie in the fourth quadrant?

Because the cell delivers power instead of consuming it. Light drives current backward through the cell (opposite to a normal forward diode current), but the cell still develops a positive voltage. Positive voltage plus negative current puts the curve in the fourth (IV) quadrant. This exact fact was tested in NEET 2024.

What is the difference between a photodiode and a solar cell?

A photodiode is operated under reverse bias and is used to DETECT or measure light (its reverse current changes with light intensity). A solar cell has no external bias and is used to GENERATE electrical power from light. Both are light-sensitive p-n junctions, but one senses light and the other supplies energy.

What is open-circuit voltage (Voc) and short-circuit current (Isc)?

Voc is the voltage across the cell when no current is drawn (terminals open) - it is the maximum voltage the cell can give. Isc is the current when the terminals are shorted together (voltage zero) - it is the maximum current. These two points are the ends of the I-V curve in the fourth quadrant, and both increase when light intensity increases.

Why is the depletion region kept near the top surface in a solar cell?

So that light can reach the junction easily. Electron-hole pairs must be created within or very near the depletion region, because only there does the built-in electric field separate them before they recombine. A thin top layer and a large surface area let more photons reach the junction and produce more current.

⚠️ The NEET trap
A solar cell works like a photodiode, so it must be connected under reverse bias to produce current.
A solar cell needs NO external bias. Light generates the carriers and the junction's own field separates them, so the cell itself acts as a source of EMF.
🧠 Photodiode DETECTS light under reverse bias; solar cell GENERATES power with no bias. Do not mix the two.

Real NEET questions

NEET 2023 (Phase 1)

Given below are two statements: Statement I: Photovoltaic devices can convert optical radiation into electricity. Statement II: Zener diode is designed to operate under reverse bias in breakdown region. In the light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer.

A · Both Statement I and Statement II are correct
B · Both Statement I and Statement II are incorrect
C · Statement I is correct but Statement II is incorrect
D · Statement I is incorrect but Statement II is correct
Solution: Photovoltaic devices are solar cells; they convert light (optical radiation) into electrical energy, so Statement I is correct. A Zener diode is specially made to work under reverse bias in its breakdown region as a voltage regulator, so Statement II is also correct. Both statements are true, so the answer is A.
NEET 2024

Consider the following statements A and B and identify the correct answer: A. For a solar cell, the I-V characteristic lies in the IV (fourth) quadrant of the given graph. B. In a reverse biased p-n junction diode, the current measured in microamperes is due to majority charge carriers.

A · A is incorrect but B is correct
B · Both A and B are correct
C · Both A and B are incorrect
D · A is correct but B is incorrect
Solution: Statement A: A solar cell delivers power, so its I-V curve has positive voltage and negative current, placing it in the fourth (IV) quadrant. A is correct. Statement B: The small reverse-bias current (in microamperes) is the reverse saturation current, carried by MINORITY carriers, not majority carriers. B is incorrect. So A is correct but B is incorrect, giving answer D.

Frequently asked

What is a solar cell in simple words?

A solar cell is a p-n junction diode that turns sunlight straight into electricity, without any moving parts and without an external battery.

Which material is commonly used to make solar cells?

Silicon is the most common material. Other materials such as gallium arsenide (GaAs) and cadmium telluride are also used because they absorb sunlight well and have a suitable energy gap.

Does a solar cell store energy?

No. A solar cell only produces electricity while light falls on it. To store the energy you must connect it to a battery or capacitor.

What decides how much current a solar cell gives?

Mainly the light intensity and the area of the cell. More light and larger area create more electron-hole pairs, so more current flows. The energy gap of the material also matters.

Is a solar cell an active or passive device?

It acts as an active source of EMF when light falls on it, because it supplies electrical energy to a circuit without needing an external supply.
