Cancer is caused by agents called carcinogens, which change a normal cell into a cancer cell. There are three kinds: physical (like X-rays, gamma rays, UV light), chemical (like tobacco smoke), and biological (oncogenic viruses that carry viral oncogenes). Our own normal cells also have genes called proto-oncogenes (cellular oncogenes, c-onc); when these get activated, they cause cancer. What is the difference between a proto-oncogene and an oncogene?

A proto-oncogene is a NORMAL gene present in your healthy cells. It has a normal job in controlling cell growth. When it gets activated or mutated under certain conditions, it changes into an active cancer-causing form called an oncogene. So proto-oncogene = the safe sleeping version; oncogene = the dangerous woken version. NCERT calls proto-oncogenes 'cellular oncogenes (c-onc)'. For NEET, remember: proto-oncogene → (activation) → oncogene → oncogenic transformation.

So the difference is the source: viral oncogenes come from a virus, while cellular oncogenes are already in our body and only cause cancer when activated. Do ionising and non-ionising radiations both cause cancer?

Yes. NCERT clearly states that ionising radiations like X-rays and gamma rays AND non-ionising radiation like UV both cause DNA damage, which leads to neoplastic (cancerous) transformation. Students often think only ionising radiation is dangerous, but UV (non-ionising) is also a physical carcinogen. This is a common NEET trap.

How does tobacco smoke cause cancer?

Tobacco smoke contains chemical carcinogens. NCERT specifically says these chemicals in tobacco smoke have been identified as a major cause of LUNG cancer. So if a NEET question links tobacco to a cancer type, the answer is lung cancer, and tobacco acts as a chemical carcinogen (not physical, not biological).

Cancer cells cannot make telomerase, so their telomeres shorten and they stop dividing.
Cancer cells over-produce telomerase, keeping telomeres long so they divide endlessly (become 'immortal'). A mutation that INHIBITS telomerase is NOT true of cancer cells.
🧠 In NEET 2016 the question asked which statement is NOT true. Cancer = more telomerase, not less. So 'mutations inhibit production of telomerase' is the false (correct) option.
