NEET 2026 (Phase 1) · ChemistryPrevious Year Question
The major product $Z$ formed in the following sequence of reactions is $\ce{C2H6 ->[Cl2][\text{UV}]}$ $X$ $\ce{->[NH3]}$ $Y$ $\ce{->[\text{(i) NaNO2/HCl}][\text{(ii) H2O}]}$ $Z$
- A.(A) $\ce{C2H5NO2}$
- B.(B) $\ce{CH3-N=N-OH}$
- C.(C) $\ce{C2H5OH}$✓
- D.(D) $\ce{C2H5NH2}$
Correct Answer
(C) (C) $\ce{C2H5OH}$
Solution & Explanation
Free-radical chlorination of ethane gives chloroethane $\ce{C2H5Cl}$ ($X$). Ammonolysis (nucleophilic substitution by $\ce{NH3}$) gives ethylamine $\ce{C2H5NH2}$ ($Y$). A primary aliphatic amine on diazotisation with $\ce{NaNO2/HCl}$ forms an unstable diazonium salt that is hydrolysed by water to the alcohol: $\ce{C2H5NH2 ->[NaNO2/HCl][H2O] C2H5OH}$ ($Z$, ethanol).
