Energy of an Orbiting Satellite: KE, PE and Total Energy

Physics · Gravitation · NEET

For a satellite in a circular orbit of radius r (r = R + h), the kinetic energy is KE = GMm/2r, the potential energy is PE = -GMm/r, and the total energy is E = KE + PE = -GMm/2r. Memory hook: total energy is exactly minus the kinetic energy (E = -KE), and PE is twice the total energy (PE = 2E). So the pattern is KE : PE : E = +1 : -2 : -1.

A satellite of mass m orbits Earth at radius r = R + h with speed v. The bar chart shows the three energies to scale: KE = +GMm/2r (positive), PE = -GMm/r (twice as large and negative), and total E = -GMm/2r (negative), giving the fixed ratio +1 : -2 : -1.

Your doubts, answered

Is the kinetic energy of a satellite positive or negative?

Kinetic energy is always positive. KE = (1/2)mv^2 and both mass and v^2 are positive, so KE = +GMm/2r. Only the potential energy (PE = -GMm/r) and the total energy (E = -GMm/2r) are negative for a bound satellite. Never write KE with a minus sign.

Why is potential energy negative but kinetic energy positive?

We set PE = 0 at infinity. As the satellite is brought from infinity closer to Earth, gravity does positive work, so the stored PE becomes negative: PE = -GMm/r. Kinetic energy comes from actual motion, so it is always positive. This is why the total E = KE + PE ends up negative overall.

What is the ratio KE : PE : total energy for a satellite?

KE = +GMm/2r, PE = -GMm/r, E = -GMm/2r. Dividing by GMm/2r gives KE : PE : E = +1 : -2 : -1. Two quick facts follow: PE = -2 KE and E = -KE. NTA loves testing these relations, so memorise them.

Does total energy depend on the satellite's mass and orbit radius?

Yes to both. E = -GMm/2r is directly proportional to satellite mass m and inversely proportional to orbit radius r. A heavier satellite has more negative energy; a satellite in a higher (larger r) orbit has less negative energy, meaning it is less tightly bound to Earth.

In the energy formulas, is r the height or the distance from Earth's centre?

r is always the distance from the centre of the Earth, not the height above the surface. If a satellite orbits at height h, then r = R + h, where R is Earth's radius. A common exam mistake is putting r = h. Always convert height to r = R + h first.

⚠️ The NEET trap
Total energy = KE + PE = +GMm/2r (adding the magnitudes and keeping the answer positive).
Total energy = KE + PE = (GMm/2r) + (-GMm/r) = -GMm/2r. The total energy of a bound satellite is negative.
🧠 Keep the sign of PE. PE = -GMm/r is negative, so it cancels half the KE and flips the total energy negative. If your total energy comes out positive, the satellite would escape, not orbit.

Real NEET questions

2016

A satellite of mass m orbits the earth (radius R) at height h. In terms of g0 (surface gravity), the total energy of the satellite is:

A · mg0R^2 / 2(R+h)
B · -mg0R^2 / 2(R+h)
C · 2mg0R^2 / (R+h)
D · -2mg0R^2 / (R+h)
Solution: Step 1: Total energy of an orbiting satellite is E = -GMm/2r, where r = R + h. So E = -GMm / 2(R+h). Step 2: Surface gravity gives g0 = GM/R^2, so GM = g0 R^2. Step 3: Substitute GM = g0 R^2 into E: E = -(g0 R^2) m / 2(R+h) = -mg0R^2 / 2(R+h). This matches option B. The negative sign confirms the satellite is bound to Earth.

Frequently asked

What is the formula for total energy of an orbiting satellite?

E = -GMm/2r, where G is the gravitational constant, M is Earth's mass, m is the satellite's mass, and r = R + h is the orbit radius from Earth's centre. Using GM = gR^2, it can also be written E = -mgR^2 / 2(R+h).

How does total energy relate to kinetic energy for a satellite?

They are equal in size but opposite in sign: E = -KE. Since KE = GMm/2r and E = -GMm/2r, the total energy is exactly the negative of the kinetic energy. Also PE = 2E = -2KE.

What happens to the satellite's energy as orbit radius increases?

E = -GMm/2r becomes less negative (closer to zero) as r increases. So a satellite in a higher orbit has greater (less negative) total energy and is more weakly bound. Raising a satellite to a higher orbit requires adding energy.

Why is the total energy negative and what does it mean?

A negative total energy means the satellite is bound to Earth and cannot escape on its own. To free it (send it to infinity where E = 0), you must add energy equal to its binding energy, GMm/2r. This is covered in the next concept, why total energy is negative.
